Friday, my Westie/Maltese mix is obviously white, lol. But I think I am already getting a little OCD with bathing him. I can not stand for him to be dirty!! And an LOVES to roll in the dirt! Lol! I have to admit that I have had him for 2wks and he has had about 6 to 7 baths!! I make sure that he is very well rinsed so that no soap residue is left on his skin, but I am worried that I am washing him too frequently. And I cant stop!!!!! He is just so pretty with his white coat and he is such a little boy and likes to dirty himself up constantly! He doesnt seem to mind the baths, and he doesnt scratch or act like it is bothering his skin at all, so is it okay that I bath him often? I would give him a bath every day if I knew it wouldnt hurt anything!
Are you at least using a good conditioner? I bathe my pup twice a week (he's mostly white, and yes he gets dirty), but I ALWAYS, ALWAYS use a good conditioner after.
I could definately handle twice a week I THINK! Lol! Would 3x hurt??
Oh yes! Conditioner is a must! He has the softest coat! I would love to know that brand of shampoo and conditioner you recommend as well. I have heard the Heartz is horrid and my pup is so young that I have actually been using Dawn and then my sons baby conditioner on him. I would love to know of good brands for puppies.
Oh no, please don't use Dawn! That's very, very strong stuff that people only use for dogs with flea problems!
I like Biogroom and Earthbath shampoos. I think Earthbath is a little better just because it uses natural ingredients and not harsh soaps and stuff. It smells really nice too. They have shampoos and conditioners.
I'd think Dawn would be extremely drying..I think it's what they use to remove oil from animals in oil spills...
I'd pick up a good dog shampoo if you're going to be washing him that frequently. I'd also try brushing some of the dirt out at times..if the coat is in good condition, most dirt should brush out
Most people don't recommend bathing the dog a lot unless he has a condition such as allergies, itching skin, etc. It dries out the skin and coat. I don't recommend bathing more than once a week. I wash Nia ever 3-4 weeks.
Even show dogs only get bathed once a week to maintain good skin oils and coat oils.
Oh! Thank you so much for letting me know about the Dawn. I had heard that on young puppies not to use the dog shampoo because it was too strong. Maybe I was thinking wrong and it was for fleas. I will go out today and get some good shampoo and conditioner. Can you find the Earth Bath in stores? Thanks so much!
Maybe you could just wipe him off when he comes in from playing outside?
Go to the dollar store/wal-mart and pick up a bundle of the cheap white washcloths that are like 12 for $3. Dampen then and wipe the dirt off regularly. Then just toss the washcloths in with your regular laundry. I say washcloths because the fabric is a little "scrubby" and wipes better than a smooth cloth.
Then you should be able to cut back to 2 baths a week.
Thanks for the advice! I think I will be able to manage only 2 baths a week. Ugh! Lol! Like today, my husband gave him a bath this morning because he said he got into the trash when he was bundling it up to take out to the curb. Then we went out into the yard for some playtime with my 4yr old son. They have developed a new game of digging a whole together. I asume you can guess what he looks like now that he and my 4yr old played in the dirt together. And I dont want him to not be able to play in the dirt, because they both love it so much. I am going to try my hardest to wait a couple of days before I wash him again, but he isnt pretty white anymore!! Lol!
Mine get muddy a lot from playing outside. What I do is just wash them once or twice a month (once a week is the most I'd do), and then other days I simply rinse them without shampoo if they get really dirty. But on a lot of dogs once the mud dries you can just brush it out. That's what I do most days Mia comes home as a mud ball.
Awesome! Thanks everyone! I picked up some Earthbath! They had it at Petsmart. I really do appriciate all of your replies! Very helpfull!
Laurelin, I will have to try that. I hadnt thought about just rinsing him off. I will see how it works out the next time I get the itch to bathe him!
