Target stores in my area. What happened to the decent pet foods?

Maybe I'm just crazy and losing my mind, but I seem to recall Target carrying, in addition to the usual low-to-middling quality "supermarket" pet foods, decent brands such as Dr Foster's & Smith, Newman's Own Organics, and PetGuard.

A recent trip to Target's pet food aisle (to tide my animals over until I could get to the pet store) revealed NONE of these brands. Not a ONE! What happened? Does anyone else's local Target still carry these brands? I noticed PetGuard is still available on the website but it states that it is an "in-store item" only.

I noticed they're pushing their "Boots & Barkley" private label everywhere. The ingredients on the can looked terrible, so I left and went over to PetSmart where I learned they now carry WELLNESS! Finally, an alternative to Blue Buffalo, though I find both foods, while excellent, to be way overpriced.

Geez, even my local WalMart carries Newman's Own and Three Dog Bakery. Neither brand thrills me but they'll certainly do in a pinch....

I'm a fan of TOTW, but it would also be nice if Target carried at least one decent food in the event I run out and need to feed the pets.....Can't believe they discontinued ALL of those brands

Unfortunately, I would think that most people who buy dog food at Target probably only want the cheap stuff, so it wasn't cost effective for them to carry more expensive brands.

yup, because the more expensive brands cost THEM more money to order too, if they order a case of totw and have to sell it for 10 bucks per 5 pounds, but they have alpo, purina and their house brand that they can sell for 3 bucks to 5 bucks for 5 pounds, it's not going to be hard to expect a trend, they may have had good intentions at first, but they are first of all, a business, if they can't get it to compete with the cheaper stuff that they HAVE to carry, then they just can't sell the more expensive stuff.

My dog is my child, so yes, I do want to do the best I can for him, don't give me those looks.

Yeah, my Target used to carry some decent products, too, like Newman's Own, Petguard and Harmony Farms (not so great, but better than their private label). They also carried some nonfood items that were a good buy and good quality, like good dog bowls, good poop bags, cute inexpensive collars and leashes, etc. Well, the last time I went, they had none of that! In fact, their shelves looked kinda bare. I'm thinking maybe they have a new pet supply buyer? What's funny is that I never bought my poop bags anywhere else and always checked there first for toys, bowls, collars, etc. Not anymore! So disappointed!

I've noticed that as well the last few times I've been in Target. I was happy to see that when I was in Publix I realized that they just started carrying Newman's Own, which I was happy about. Because before that they only carried the ones with absolutely 0 meats in it.

My friend feed their dog whatever is on sale, but I've given them some Healthwise and EVO kibble. They noticed a difference in their dog, yet they still don't want to buy it... they'll stick to whatever they can find. *sigh* I'm giving them a 1/2 bag of Acana Grasslands to use because I don't use it anymore, but I know it won't change their mind yet again.

I never looked at the food selection, but Target used to have the BEST dog/cat toy and small animal supply selection of any department store, cheaper than the pet stores. Now they sell overpriced junk. I don't know what happened.

In my small town I gotta go to the local pet store for TOTW. We don't even have a Target. I wouldn't go to a Target/Albsertsons/Walmart for dog food anyway, though. I always go to the local feed/pet stores first to look.

No, I've never bought food at Target, either, but they did have a few decent selections. I buy my food at a pet specialty store. But, I have bought collars, bowls, beds, poop bags, etc. there. It seems like lately even that selection has gone down in quality and number. Still disappointed.

Ah. True. I get most of my not-food pet supplies from WalMart. After having learned recently that almost all of grocery store food is garbage anyway, I don't give it a second glance anymore.

The only thing I can get at target (and I buy in bulk) are these slightly oversized tennis balls I used for fetch with Bones (he likes to run around with them in his mouth and those are the only ones I feel are 'safe' from the threat of swallowing). Though I've only seen them carry them every once in awhile (when I see them I buy like 10 packs of 2 :P ). They local one here sells some kongs stuff and other toys but most of the stuff is junk. The food is all junk and etc.
