Puppy doesn't eat 3 times a day
My 3 month shih tzu doesn't seem to want to eat 3 times a day. He eats in the morning and night after some pushing, he doesn't jump towards the food as soon as he sees it as many dogs do. Anyways, he rarely eats his afternoon meal. Maybe once or twice a week he will eat half of it but that's it. Also, he will not eat dry food it has to be moistened with some water. I tried feeding him dry food he wouldn't eat it so I put water in it and he eats it up. Should I hand feed him afternoon meals and should his food be dry or is it ok if it's moistened?
Re: Puppy doesn't eat 3 times a day
It is good to moisten the food but you cannot save leftovers for later so there could be some wasted every so often.
Or if you have the time do a training session rather than hand feeding in the middle of the day.
If you are concerned about him not eating enough on 2x a day perhaps increase the amount offered when he does prefer to eat. The reason 3x until 6 months is suggested is concern about low blood sugar in small/tiny breed pups and too much food at one meal can cause soft to loose stool or vomiting if tummy cannot hold it all.
Oh, what I normally do is cover the food with some paper towel and feed it to him at his next meal time. Should I not do that? Also, should I continue trying to feed him in the afternoon or just stop it.
