When it's safe to stop feeding "puppy" food?

Smokey, my mixed breed, turned 1 year old today. When am I supposed to stop giving her the "puppy" food. She is still quite bony as exercises a lot but her fav food is the puppy formula (canned puppy Wellness brand). I do give her some adult food from time to time but will feeding her the puppy stuff for a bit longer affect her? Thanks!

AAFCO actually sets standards for two categories--- "growth and reproduction" and "adult maintenance"

Presuming you are not feeding a giant breed dog who has specific nutrient needs, a puppy food is safe for adult dogs because it is also designed to be fed to pregnant and nursing mama dogs. However, an adult maintenance or all life stages food might be a better fit.

An "All Life Stages" (ALS) food is one that fits the nutrient profiles of both categories (there is a LOT of overlap because the standards are mostly minimums).

She may need an increase in calories and protein if she is very active. Remember that when you compare canned food to dry food (protein percent for example), you have to account for water weight. To get like-for-like, use a dry matter basis.

Thanks for your input. As long as she enjoys her food I think that's the most important thing for now. Just trying to get her to eat more

Hi Desiree, we give our dogs an evolutionary diet from Earthborn Holistic. It is somewhat expensive, but very palatable and both of our VERY active pups enjoy eating it. I'd recommend it to anyone (based on personal experience only - I will add that precursor,) that is trying to put weight on a dog. Our pup has put on quite a bit of weight (good, not bad) and has a shiny coat.
