I was totally shocked when I read at www.dogfoodanalysis.com that Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul by Diamond Pet food rated 5 stars!! I was feeding Orijen, but it was getting really expensive, so I am transitioning her to CS brand. It has only a few grains, which I don't mind. Plus it's almost $30 cheaper for a 30lb bag!! Anyone else feed their dogs this food?
It was a close second choice for me when I switched a while back. The only thing that discouraged me was the name. I am sick-to-death of the Chicken Soup branding.
I had origanally had them both on Chicken Soup when I got them. Then after a while I thought they needed to be on something "better". So I put them on Taste Of The Wild. Well they ended up with extremely loose stools that never cleared up and when I put them back on Chicken Soup I couldn't get them cleared up either ( I dont think I gave it long enough in hindsight, that and I was feeding them to much). Out of desperation I tried Purina Puppy Chow and their stools firmed up right away. I decided to keep them on it between that and the fact that financially money is tight and $24.54 with tax for 35# was nice. Thats $8.18 a month. Well lately I had been feeling bad about my decision. Especially since I could tell in their coats that it was effecting them outwardly, so what about inwardly. So I went to the feed store to look. I found Chicken Soup for The Puppy Lover for $35.55 with tax for 30#. Thats $11.85 a month. Only $3.65 more a month. I think I can swing that. So no more Purina Puppy Chow. `
Molly is currently on Chicken Soup. She has a VERY sensitive stomach so there isn't a lot she can eat. For Christmas she got a small bag of California Natural herring & sweet potato.
I read somewhere that if you keep your dog on one kind of food for too long, they can become allergic to it. So, I thought I might try this new kind for a while, then rotate. Any suggestions?
I dont personally believe keeping a dog on one food creates the potential for an allergy. All my dogs growing up and as an adult have had just one food. I've never had a dog with an allergy (dont strike me now, knocks wood). I think its just the luck of the draw. jmho
I never heard of dog allergies until I got Molly. I had read about dog behaviour and training but somehow allergies slipped by me. I have to be so careful with Molly that it does create worry on my part. It's kind of funny though ... my older son and I have pretty bad allergies and sensitive stomachs also. Since I know how miserable they can make you feel I guess it makes me have more sympathy for Molly. Count yourself hugely blessed for having an allergy free dog!!!
My dogs do great on Chicken Soup . Yes, I agree with RonE, the name is supremely annoying, but it's a very good food for a very affordable price, so I won't quibble.
My two older dogs eat Chicken Soup. They have done amazing on it and definitally love it. The price for the quality is definitally a bonus. Chloe would be on it as well, but she has a sensitive stomach and I'd rather just stick with a very basic food (California Natural Lamb and Rice).
I do hate the name though. If I tell people I feed my dog's "Chicken Soup" I get weird looks. :0)
I feed Dallas CS for puppies (large breed) I can't vouch that she loves it, because she never gets excited over her meals. I switched her once and she didn't get excited over that brand either. But I think she is doing good on it.
Mojo is on CS for puppies but I'm not sure what I think of it... He eats about 50% more than he did on Eukanuba and his stools are not only about 50% larger now but he actually goes more often too!
When I first made the switch, I noticed he was really hyper and didn't have much focus but I'm not sure if that was due to diet or not. It may just be adolescence or even a transition phase between foods. It was our first time switching so I don't have anything to compare it with.
I'm leaving him on CS for now, but I'm not sure if I'll be buying it next time (he takes a couple months to get through a bag of food). I did notice he doesn't seem to care as much for it as his old food. He'll eat it just fine, but I think he'd be happy if I switched back!
For what it's worth, our cats are eating CS and love it!
