Marrow bones ... Bad for ALL dogs or some dogs?

I thought since we have lots of raw feeders here I thought I would put this out here:

I like to give my dogs marrow bones (like the kind you make soup with) now I have has folks say they can break teeth on them & have even been called cruel for giving them!

But the thing is that I don't have any hard core powerful chewers anymore, they are all pretty "safe" average chewers & I feel comfortable giving them.

Is it ok? Am I a bad owner for giving them marrow bones? They enjoy them so much it's a shame to have to take them away

Re: Marrow bones ... Bad for ALL dogs or some dogs?

It is said that weight bearing bones are a bad thing. And maybe they are. But I've always fed mine marrow bones at least twice a week since I've (or my parents) owned dogs, which is around 24 years now. Never had a problem. I didnt even know that they are considered not suitable for dogs to a lot of people until recently.

But I could just be lucky.

I believe that as long as you do your reading on what YOU feed YOUR dogs and are able to make an informed decision......well so be it. Kinda a 'damned if you do, damned if you dont'. There will surely be people that have fed their dog a marrow bone once or twice, their poor dog cracked a tooth or worse....and it cost them a fortune at the vet, not to mention the dogs discomfort/pain and are 100% against them. Fair enough too, I can understand that. But being called cruel - wow - that's a bit extreme. A dog can die from being put under GA, so do we then not risk it to desex or treat for serious illness as they could it. Not the best example I know, but I'm sure you get the point :-)

You are not a bad owner. NO way. But it IS a personal decision. If you feel comfortable and are in yourself are happy to give them to them - do it I say. If only more 'cruel owners' fed their dogs marrow bones...god forbid lol

Lol I like it with they cook them & you get to eat the marrow out with a little spoon .

Mine love them & make all sorts of funky noises. They actually suck on the ends to get the marrow out

I have been feeding my dogs marrow bones for years-n-years-n-years. I have never had one crack or chip a tooth on a marrow bone. Sometimes my grocery sells ones that are longer and my husband will cut them in half for the dog. I save the 3-4 inch ones and fill them with the same thing you would fill a kong with and freeze it.

I give them as well. My dogs will strip the gristle off the outside and suck the marrow out, and sometimes gnaw the edges a bit, but they do not chew them aggressively. So I am comfortable with them despite the risks.

I give these all the time. But I also know my dogs are not power chewers and they clean the insides out .... then they hardly even look at it anymore. Also .... Once the bones are empty .... I will fill them with peanut butter and yogurt sometimes just to get them to chew on them again to clean their teeth! Talk about recycling! Lol! With the peanut butter all you have to do is just smear some around inside of the bone ..... too many calories if filled!

Re: Marrow bones ... Bad for ALL dogs or some dogs?

It depends on the dog. Power-chewers=no The ones who basically lick and clean the bone out=usually not a problem

I do the denistry where I work and see alot of cracked upper 4th premolars or also known as the carnasal tooth. When owners are questioned about treats it is that they have given an antler or a marrow bone. My philosphy is you can only gnaw on a jawbreaker for so many times before you crack a tooth it is the same as a dog. Size is not a factor either. Friday a Shih-poo of 12 pounds had to have his upper 4th removed because of a cracked molar. His owners had treated him to an antler in the previous months. I personally do not feed my dogs these kind of bones because of what I see at work.

Also, rare but does happen. The bones digested can act like a blockage in the intestines. I have one a year show up so as many animals that are seen by the clinic I feel this is not very common but can happen. The bone fragements are like shard of glass and the fecal is so dry it is like cement in the intestines. Luckily we so far have been able to dislodge the blockage by irrigation and have not had to surgically remove any blockage. I am amazed that the intestines have not been torn due to the tiny shards of bones.

Does this happen to every dog? NO but this can and does happen so I guess this is why I do not give bones to my dogs.
Does it make you a cruel owner? NO I feel that many things has dangers to them but we still do them: ie: I go horseback riding even though I know people have been killed or maimed while doiing this activity.
I would try therapy but the couch was full!

OMG I do the same thing only I used canned food, then refreeze it I try to stay away from PB though, it causes cannon butt for my guys. So I use either cottage cheese, yogurt or left over canned DF if I have any.

it would be so great if we were closer, then I could invite you on the backside & you could see our horses , & when live racing comes back here you could see them run .

I really feel like we bonded over the sad even that was the death of our heart dogs, as tragic as that was. the way they left each of us was different, but it was kind of the same also in the fact that it was so sudden. We both thought they were going to make it & they both suddenly took a turn for the worst.

then we both adopted challenging dogs, challenging in different ways with Eddee being michevious & Buddy being fearful & lacking confidence, but in many ways they were just what each of us needed to "get our minds off" losing our friends & kind of give us (or me at least) the kick in the butt we needed to get out of our funks.

Not you got a new puppy & I am also entertaining the thought of getting one too ... TOO WEIRD! o_O

Lol on other forums I was berated & belittled for giving my dogs marrow bones, I have been told by others on other forums that I am "putting my dogs dental health in jeopardy" by giving them marrow bones LMBO.

Well aggressive chewers CAN chip or break teeth on marrow bones. Honestly I don't think there's ANY chewing material that is blanket "good" or "bad" - it always depends on the dog and their chewing style.

Re: Marrow bones ... Bad for ALL dogs or some dogs?

I know of the marrow soup bones are too short they can get them stuck over their lower jaws. So I make sure they are long enough & the opening is too small for them to stick their lower jaws through them.

Now Izze I never have marrow bones lol ... She was a FAMOUSLY aggressive chewer, so I always have her turkey necks or chicken backs for teeth cleaning.
