Yet Another New Grand-dog

A week ago, my son rescued a 4-year-old lab mix named Duke. I think Duke may have some border collie.

They live just outside of Minneapolis and I went up there this last weekend to meet Duke and, incidentally, to see my son.

They live in a townhouse on a lake. There are miles of trails surrounding the lake and a small, fenced dog park right in the complex. It seems nearly everyone has dogs.

It's possibly worth noting that, if my son had posted on dogforums about wanting a dog, most of us (including me) would not have offered much encouragement. He graduated from college in May, has his first big-boy job and will probably go to grad school in a few years. He lives in a dog-friendly townhouse with no yard and works a demanding schedule.

Still, his predisposition to canine companionship is genetic and I can't fault him for it. It's a very nice dog - social and playful and very high-energy. Duke gets a couple of long walks each day, swims in the lake several times each week and runs with my son's room-mate - who seems happy for the company.

What a cutie! And despite the encouragement we may or may not provide, sometimes people who are true dog lovers make it work even when it seems improbable that they should have a dog...I picked out Zoe the day before I graduated from college, moved to an apartment with no yard in the heart of Boston, and got my very first dog-owning experience bringing home an 8-week old golden retriever...but I made it work and I consider myself a pretty great dog owner! I have no doubt your son will provide a great life for his new buddy.

I can't wait to see pictures (Thanksgiving maybe?) from when Duke and Zeke come to visit the lovely ladies!

And let's not forget Dante.

With five dogs, family get-togethers should be fun.

I must have missed Dante somehow...he's a cutie too.
At least your family gatherings will be more entertaining than mine, where our family can't believe that we insisted on bringing our dog!

Re: Yet Another New Grand-dog

Dante is my daughter's new addition, as of about three weeks ago. In fact, today he's getting snipped, so Zeke is staying with us for a while to give Dante a break. Zeke is outside running with the big dogs as we speak.

I've always been a one-dog person. Having multiple dogs around all the time is a hoot and a special challenge a genuine joy, all at once.

My sister has 4-5 dogs, but she's ten hours away, so it's unlikely she's going to bring them all by for a visit any time soon.

Duek is a gorgeous boy! Look at that smile!

And the fact that not only did your son rescue him, But he is big, black, and not a puppy... that shows he was raised well!

Kudos to him!

I can't wait until Esther and Molly get a look at that handsome boy!! Duke is gorgeous ~ and he looks like he's a big boy as well.

It's nice that your son's roommate takes Duke running with him. Sounds like between the 2 of them Duke will be well taken care of.
