I just couldn't help myself

I was browsing craigslist and found this adorable 1 yr old st bernard (male) listed and it said the dog was going to go to a local pound if nobody wanted him. I decided it wouldn't hurt to send an email (but we all knows that leads to more)

So, I get the e-mail back saying he's still available and chained in the backyard until someone else comes along to take care of him.

Well, I didn't have to finish reading before I was on the phone getting an address and this is what I came home with:

They have called him Killer but im sorry I don't want to call this dog that. If he is one year old is it too late to change his name or will I confuse the dog?

He's too cute to be a killer and he ran away from my cat and tried to hide under the coffee table (which of course almost toppled over). Anyhow... im not sure yet if im going to keep him or try to find him a forever him.

He's mine for a few days at least!

He is SO cute! He sounds like a total sweetheart and certainly not a killer.

Sometimes it does confuse dogs to change their names but to be honest if I adopted a dog named Killer I would most certainly change it. He will probably adapt to a new name.

I am so glad you rode in and saved him! What a hero! Whatever you decide, hats off for rescuing him from a fate that I don't even want to think about!
He is terribly cute, and I would certainly change the name!

Call him Kilo, because he'll probably grow to be a thousand pounds.

Re: I just couldn't help myself

New home new name all at once I see it as a fresh start for this beautiful boy. I am sure the bad name and the bad home will be left in the past and he will move on quickly. He is a handsome boy. I love his markings. I like the name Bentley for a St. or Wilbur or something, not killer. Is he as sweet as he looks?

Oh yikes, I couldn't have a dog named Kilo after all the Pit bulls at the drug houses are named that. Just a personal dislike of that name for me though. No offense Curb, it is a cute idea.

Awww what a kind person you are. You are definitely his guardian angel.
Through my experience I've found that my dogs have never had a problem with me changing their names.

I vote for changing his name and the sooner the better. Good luck and keep us updated.

He looks like a sweetheart. You could always call him Kellie considering it kinda sounds like Killer, The name goes both ways, and it would cut down on the confusion.

What a cutie! There was a St Bernard in puppy class with Jack and I, and that adorable Saint's name was JellyRoll. It was a great name for a Saint, and he was an excellent dog.

Good on you for getting that dog out of there and giving him a chance at a real life!

OMG!! What a great looking pup!!

I certainly hope that you are able to keep him but even if your not, I'm sure that you'll find him a GREAT forever home!

I would definitely change the name. I'm not a fan of the name "Killer" for a dog.

Re: I just couldn't help myself

He honestly doesn't reply to his name very well anyway so it looks like it wont be hard to change it. I dont think he was given much attention so maybe he never got a chance to get used to his name. Who knows.

We have started calling him Halfton which I think suits him well. He is a little shy and VERY passive. I also have a 7 month old German Shepherd and this big guy submits to her. He crawled up to her and then rolled on his back. She likes him but she's intimidated by his size. So far they have gotten along and Pandora has tried bringing him toys to try to get him to tug back but I don't think he knows what toys are it makes me so mad/sad at the same time.

He's definitely getting used to bil jac frozen dog treats.

I'm going to Petco tomorrow to restock on food. I have a feeling I will need it. His previous owner was feeding him Gravy Train, yuck. I refuse to feed him that even to wean him off of it so I think i'll buy a bunch of canned pumpkin and Nautral Balance.

It should get him off to a better start. More pics when I have more daylight to play with. He's also a lil scared of the camera.

My uncle uses to raise St. Bernards...big, sloppy and cute!
Congrats for saving a big dog.

Killer--how original I HATE stupid dog names. I was reading one book on training and the author states give your dog a NICE name you WANT to say...what sort of name is Killer...? It's mean....

Yes, your new name is MUCH nicer.

Re: I just couldn't help myself

Aww, he's so cute! From that pic he doesn't look to be year old, but only 5 to 7 months old. Though I haven't seen a st.benard in person, just in movies, so my perception on how large they are may be off. lol

Re: I just couldn't help myself

His fur was all matted and I work at Petsmart one of the groomers there offered to bathe him for free for me.

She fought with his coat for awhile but couldn't get many of the mats out so she shaved him

I don't think there was much of an alternative. It was pretty bad!

It sure does make him look a lot younger. I'll take more pics soon once he's more settled in here. (oh noes im already attached). He might be younger than a year, that's what the previous owner told me but he couldnt even provide shot records so who knows.

He goes to the vet next week anyway.

He's absolutely cute! I don't think he deserves the name "killer". Just try to give him a new name and help him adapt to it.
