He could blind somebody with his coat.. Aim a flashlight the wrong way, yow!

This is his coat normally unless it's reflecting light.. lol

Re: Shiny fur...

Gorgeous!!

I remember the pictures you posted maybe 2-3 months ago showing Ollie's coat. It was coming back but still had some dry dull patches.

He's come a long way. Congratulations.

Ah, that's the trouble with a healthy black dog...difficult to photograph.

What a pretty boy. All the other dogs are going to start teasing him for spending so much time in front of the mirror.

Re: Shiny fur...

He looks fantastic! You'll have to get him some doggles so he doesn't blind himself one of these days

Re: Shiny fur...

Thanks everyone!

Yep, it's come a long way. And while it's now healthy, it has a lot of growing to do. The neck and shoulders are fluffy and thick now (about 3-4" long) but the back and legs still have about an inch or inch and half to go. The tail is starting to get healthy. The color is not there yet, but his tail is soft now instead of dry and rough. It probably will take 2 more coat blows for the tail to heal. It usually takes years to heal a damaged tail so gotta be patient!

But he looks so much better now. Yay!

Re: Shiny fur...

Yeah, I'm assuming that's what's doing the trick. I originally planned to just feed him a whole fish once or twice a week, but it's surprisingly hard to find fish that's not gutted....

So I give him fish oil... well I'm not sure how often. Probably once every 2-3 days. I've seen people mention giving that much, so I think it's about right. He looks good, at least, so I see no reason at the moment to increase or decrease the amount.

If you have an opinion one way or the other I'd be interested!

I'm hoping to find a fish market or something in San Francisco. You'd think SF would have a ton of fish markets... but the best I can find is fish bodies without head or tail, from fish stores... Even safeway had more fish, but it was trout and salmon from northwest pacific.. which are poisonous. So no go there.

Funny, I felt the same until I adopted Ollie. Now I tell the difference between a wolf and a Husky instantly. I'm so used to the difference now, that I sometimes get people asking me if he's a wolf, and I look at them like they just told me the sky is green.

Then I realize most peoplecan't tell the difference. Though, it is MUCH harder for me to tell the difference when his nose is down and his eyes are upwards like in this picture:

But that's not the best pic of it. It can look pretty unnerving to the everyday person, though.

While I'm here, here's some pics of the "Before".

To give you a frame of reference... the dull brown is his undercoat, and anything black is his topcoat. That's how bad his coat was. And the topcoat is about half the length it is now.

I really don't understand what could have happened to create such extensive damage. He doesn't appear to have been abused, is well socialized and a happy dog. So I don't have an idea. My best idea is that maybe he got shaved? But I haven't heard anything of the sort.

Re: Shiny fur...

Ollie looks great! I'm working on coat issues with two of my dogs, Shiner, the new one, looks terrible. He's all stained and looks like he has split ends. He even had bald patches that are coming back now, but the rest still looks bad. Frosty's coat just went to crap a couple months ago. It got dry looking, and then he just blew it all out. I switched his food and he's on a salmon and safflower oil supplement recommended by the vet. It appears to be coming back now.
