A few of the dogs I've returned

For some reason, loose dogs seem to come here. I only have pics of about half of them. Yesterday while training, Sioux and I came across a poodle sans handler. Luckily she had her home address on the tags so we just took her home to an ever so grateful owner. That got me thinking about the others I've returned to where they belong. In 9 months at this house we've come across 11 dogs. Here's the few pics I have, hope they're all doing well...

(Maxwell)

(Hunter-He was so dirty I bathed and brushed him clean)

(Spook, Sioux-Mine, Mystic-Timberwolf)

(Prince)
Not pictured: Pete, Cisco, Abby, Rollins, Chad, and another I can't place at the moment.

WOW! I just can't believe how little some people care for their dogs. And how much some care for other peoples dogs. You're a good guy Harris

I don't think it's lack of care.... Ollie's gotten out quite a few times. RonE's dogs are magicians as well. I know a few others who have difficult times keeping their dogs contained on this forum. If it was the same dog multiple times then yeah, I'd be concerned.

I didn't mean people like you and all the others that care enough to be tearing their hair out until they find their wayward dog. I read about you running Ollie down for three miles in your knickers. (snicker) I meant the ones who let their dog out the front door to take themselves out for a walk.(like my sister)

Or just figure they'll come back on their own.

That's not what I mean.. The dogs may have dug out of the fence, jumped over, bolted out of the front door and lost track of the dog, etc. There are many reasons the dog may not be with their owner.

I've lost Ollie for 2 days , about 3 months ago. And he ran out right in front of me. I just simply can't keep up with a dog. I do agree that having the dog go for a walk by itself and come back by itself is bad, but that's not usually the case with runaways. Usually the dog takes it upon himself to disappear from home.

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

I should add I've had a couple runners myself. Not least my peccary who chews through 10 ga. chain link fencing.

I slept on the floor of my restaurant one night while she was gallivanting in the jungle. Berating myself the whole time.

By NO means am I the perfect owner and never intended to present myself that way. Sorry if I gave offense to anyone.

ETA I think we were typing at the same time.

ETa eta: I think I'm confusing myself. I was assuming that some of those dogs had uncaring owners and R. you bring up a good point, it may not always be the case, but If I caught your dog, I'd be giving you the eagle eye before I let you have him back. I guess I'm naturally suspicious when it comes to pet care. Too much time in the third world I guess

Yeah, may be cultural differences there. In the city and suburbs, people don't typically let their dog out of the backyard or house. Bad owners will keep their dog in the backyard, forever. As opposed to letting it roam.

A different story in the country, though. There's more roamers, but also no telling if they are feral or not.

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

Sorry for hijacking Harris.

90 percent of the people who have dogs here have them on a chain. Fenced yard or not. Only expats or dog fighters walk their dogs on a leash. I see a lot of dog fighters riding their bikes through the streets of Belize City with a loose pittie running along behind for "conditioning". (you know what they are because of the scars) Dog fighting is not illegal here. Neither is cockfighting. I am always scared on the short 15 feet from the car door to the vet's office. Luckily they have a steel door that stays locked unless someone's going in or out.

Just last week, Mom called me to remove a big black dog that had come in our restaurant and parked itself next to a customers table. (it was one of ours that had, you guessed it, dug under the fence) We've since cemented the whole dog run into the ground.

Mom didn't even recognize one of our own dogs.

Wow you've gotten some pretty beautiful dogs there. I've been wondering while reading this post; are the owners always happy when you take them back/find them?

There are a few people who do this in my area and I would really like to call them all in. A man just two doors down used to let his little dog out everyday. I was bitten by him trying to get him back home until he found out where I lived.. The he'd just fallow me home..great. While walking down the street he'd come running up to me and I'd again take him home, never got as much as a thank you from the owner. I saw him almost get hit by a car and after telling his owner he still let him out. He was a funny looking dog(cute) but funny and I'm glad he keeps him in now. I guess he got sick of me coming over to his house to give his dog back...

Another dog that has run after Ted and I on walks ready to attach. A big, mean dog..just what we all want out. I can't even take the bigger dogs out afraid they'll get attached again. I can pick Teddie up and keep walking I can't do that with a 80+ pound dog. Mahalo has been attached to the point of blood poring out of her mouth. After talking to the owner we found out their dog wasn't vaccinated and they still let this dog out all the time. We have to be so much more careful walking now than we used to.

Harrise you're doing such a great thing getting these dogs back into their homes and off of the street. I can't believe how many you've taen in though. I've had a few, but no where near that much. I seem to get the sick, skin and bones type dogs and never want to give them back.

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

Meh, you guys aren't hijacking. All these dogs had people actively out looking for them. I've got a routine now, when we get another loose dog, we all harness up and go for a walk. Most of the time we come across the people, Max is the only one we've had overnight, because we kept missing eachother as we were out looking for his people. Growing up we had a Malamute that would straight bolt, and he's been my motivation in getting this gang of sleds under control. I've only got Sioux left as a bolter, not one of them jumps or digs. He bolts right in front of me on the front porch. In fact a couple of days ago their training came to life, I completely forgot the garage was open (it's always open to the backyard so they have a cool sheltered place to go), came inside and finished cleaning for half an hour. Went to take the trash out, and Coco was laying on the front porch!!! I've never been so pleased with myself. Her last owner had lost her on a couple of occasions right out the front door. Now I'm reminded that I didn't finish with Sioux completely, yet another project.

Chrissy, I'd be the guy you would love to hate for being so xenophobically American... I'd have to stick to the "tourist" parts of Belmopan. When my mother went back to Panama, she came back with stories that ensure I have no reason to leave this land (except passing through Canada on way to Alaska). I mean when the military escorts you around because you have an American passport... Yeesh... Not for me...

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

LOL You could always stay at Cheersworld. My crackhead cousin told me that the only reason we're successful (and he's not) here is because I've created a little Canada. Whatever. It is probably why I can go 6 weeks or more without leaving the property. I have my own little dictaorship where animal mistreatment never occurs. Muwaaahhahaha.

Bring your girl and the dogs too. We have a pet friendly hotel. It's only 5-7 days through Mex.>**<

Your Mom's from Panama? that's pretty cool. Does that mean you speak spanish?

Even though all those dogs had caring owners I still think you're a pretty cool dude Harris.

PS. Why the military escort? Elucidate.
I haven't made it to Panama although I've heard amazing things from others.

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

Well... The Chinese have openly been trying to monopolize the ports and the canal, and their overwhelming presence has agitated the local population to the point where most of my family there is in a gang or cartel of some kind. Some of these Easterners have also taken to the ilicit markets due to the ease of accessing it. So, naturally, kidnapping has become their "internet boom". One guess as to which nationality is the Gran Cru of targets. My mother was trying to get back to the village in the jungle where she grew up, once on the egde of the city heading south, they were stopped at a checkpoint. The Panamanian military has it set up so if you's a whitey, you take an armed soldier with you to the checkpoint at the end, where they press upon you the importance of heading back the way you came. She alone could probably blend in, but hubby is as gringo as they come. Overall, she says the culture has become quite pessimistic with it's own future. The stories just go on and on from there. Hearing it from her unique perspective makes it achingly clear though. I'm not gonna see that place.

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

Wow! I had NO idea.

I knew it has be come the new M Laundering/Hiding your money hot spot(there's quite a few Belizean bucks down there from what I hear) but I hadn't heard the rest.
I still want to see before we leave Belize.

Belize isn't like that at all. Of all our surrounding countries I'd say Belize is the safest. You can walk around on the city streets alone, and be as safe as you would be in Denver or NY or any other big city. I rarely lock our car doors in Belmopan and have no problems. It's mostly animal mistreatment that I have a problem with here.

Maybe Panama will pull it together in the future. We always have the future and that's where I try to keep my gaze.

Re: A few of the dogs I've returned

My cousins (who are half Panamanian) just moved here from Panama, and they aren't homesick at all. They said the guys at school were constantly groping them, and the teachers didn't do anything about it . So they came here to finish their schooling. And my parents grew up in the Panama Canal Zone, but they don't want to go back to visit because of all the changes, they think it would be too sad to see it. Yeah, I know this is totally random, but you guys started it by talking about Panama .
