It's hard to tell. He may just be one big Heinz 57. |

| Re: newest pics of bello. do you all say he is pit or a mix now more than before? jcd He is certainly not a Pit Bull! Some type of mix breed probably. Maybe Pit mix maybe not. I see possibility of mountain cur/black mouth cur. I do see maybe mastiff too or possibly shepherd. Maybe Rhodesian Ridgeback. Really don't know. |

It's another name for a mixed breed - sometimes used for a dog with so many breeds that it's impossible to identify them.
May I respectfully request that you pick a font that a bit easier to read - perhaps the default one? Just because the forum offers the option to change the font type, size and color, doesn't mean it's a good idea. Quote:

| That IS a very handsome dog. If people ask what kind he is when you're out on the town with him, I would just make something up. I used to tell people, who couldn't believe my 110# dog was a lab, that he was a Guatemalan Gazehound. Quite a few people said something like, "Oh, yea, my friend has one of those."

| Re: newest pics of bello. do you all say he is pit or a mix now more than before? jcd He is a very pretty boy indeed, how old is he? I see a little RR in the line of the neck and the profile of the head. GSD or Mastiff from the color. Quote:

The perplexed looks are so worth it. I've even told them it's an extremely variable breed, and rare too but if they were interested I could hook them up with a puppy. For a price of course. |

I don't know anything could be definite in a mixed breed. I know on another forum where it was mentioned that everyone guessed a dog to be shepherd mix and the DNA test showed poodle.
I own, raise and show Pits and I'm not saying he looks like a Pit. Believe me I know what a Pit actually looks like. I'm not saying he isn't a Pit mix either. It is just very hard to tell. There are many breeds which look similar to Pits so the dog could actually be mixed with one of those other breeds.
I think that you should at least take all the possibilities to heart and take in what people are saying. If you have convinced yourself he is a Pit mix then that’s fine, there is always a chance he could be. But there is also a chance he might not be and we have given plausible breed he could be mixed with.
People often try to find what their dog is a mix by certain traits but those traits often fall into more then one breed. "probably mixed with shepard we think but except for the coloring of a shepard"
The color is also that of a Pit. If you are saying that he is part Pit, you can't know if the mom/dad was a black&tan or sable Pit which means you can't rule the color to mean he is a shepherd mix. There are also other breeds besides APBTs and GSDs which can be sable or tri colored. He could be a Rottweiler mix and that is where he gets the color.
He is sable and actually I posted pics his pic and other sable Pits in your other thread.
Again I see the possibility of cur or other mix. Whether it is with Pit or some other breed.
You don't at all see similarity to Black Mouth Cur?
or the Mountain Cur?
Similar body, head, ears.
I would even say Catahoula, as they can be a number of different colors and look similar to Pits. Here is a Catahoula

He certainly isn't build like any muscular Pit I've ever seen. While pics don't always show that well he isn't "muscular" more like toned and fit would describe it. Which is good. Many breeds can have a tendency to be naturally fit.
This Rhodesian Ridgeback is toned and I've seen other with better visible definition, just as I've seen Dogo and Catahoula with good muscle, similar to Pits.

| Re: newest pics of bello. do you all say he is pit or a mix now more than before? jcd Another Pit
Another Pit pup even the ears are starting to flap back like pit
A dogs ears flapping back has nothing to do with them being a Pit or not. Many breeds ears flap back. Thats just part of being a dog not a Pit. Most dogs that don't have huge hound ears will and can flap them back. My Boxer has ears like his and so did my American Bulldog and they started to hold them back also. If dogs don't have erect or cropped ears they will flap them back in many breeds. Even ones with erect or crops might hold them back from time to time. Now I see why so many dogs that bite are misidentified as Pit Bulls. If it has a short coat, ears flapped back, muscles and bites it must be a Pit Bull. In these pics he appears to have full drop ears like a hound breed. While some Pits might have those type of ear set it isn't what is usually bred for. Although it is frequently seen in curs and they can put them back, so can Catahoula and Ridgebacks, it about how they chose to hold their ears and the situation as dogs use them as body language. the tail is all pit also.
It is hard to see the tail. Could you get a shot of him stacked. That might help many of us. A Pits tail however isn't distinct at all in itself. Similar to other breeds in width and length and even tail set. So that is really stretching it. the pink/white spot under his chin along with the white hair on his front chest are all pit features.
So white on the chest means Pit? My Boxer had white under the chin as well along with some pink skin. She also had good muscle, short hair and ears which flapped back at times. Maybe she was a Pit all along? Many, many breeds have white on their chest. I can't even go through and name all the breeds which might have a white chest and be accompanied by other white and pink skin. Although a cur is one of them. (and the Rigdeback too) Your dog doesn't appear to have much white either, although some Pits can be solid/near solid they are frequently seen with Irish White markings and also Piebald. he has the shorter legs also like pit.
Pits don't have short legs. So I'm not sure what you mean by shorter legs, as compared to what. Pits are a balanced breed when it comes to length and height. If their legs were short it would inhibit their athletic ability and them being agile. It would make them longer then they are tall. I don't think any of the Pits I posted have shorter legs when compared to most other breeds. Perhaps ones know for being very rangy/tall (Dane or Wolfhound), but not to Boxer, Cur, Ridgeback, American Bulldog and others.
Here are more for you to compare with. It is possible that he is mixed with Pit but I certainly wouldn't say definite.
