| Re: Peoples attitudes I am 63 yrs old and was raised with out spankings. If I was spanked it was before I can remember and I have always been respectful to others. This is not to say I am against spanking I'm not. Children today are being raised by a "me generation" and too much importance is on "things" This is my thought anyway.
It is true that I grew up in a different society than we have today. I was born in 1943 so was raised in the 40's and 50's. Most people were respectful then and it was passed down. The community expected me to behave myself amd today people expect kids to have no manners, respect or other such qualities. Respect is such an important value to posses

Respect is such an important value to posses | The problem is the "me generation" isn't allowed to spank their kids. Don't get me wrong not every kid needs at a spanking to learn respect but there are a lot more that do then don't. It is just a mommy dog nipping at her pups when they get out of line. Take away her ability to nip and see what kind of pups she has.
I am raising four girls with the oldest being 11. They get punished in some form, a spanking, grounded, or take something away. We mix it up. Of course when they are good they get spoiled rotten. They all have respect and are very very good kids. This past Easter we visited the brother in law. We all went out to eat, eight of us. We are sitting there eating our food and this older lady walks up. She tells us how nice it is to see kids that are well behaved. Then goes on to tell us a story of the last time she was out and some very rude kids. Ten minutes later she comes back and gives each kid five bucks. |

| Re: Peoples attitudes My 3 and 5 year old sit through church. They bring 1 "quiet toy" with them. I pack a baggie of snacks and my 3 year old eats them. My 5 year old listens to the sermon. He likes to hear them. I DO understand tho where youre coming from when you go to a late night movie when kids are "supposed" to be in bed.
People don't do what's right for their kids either when they do that. They need a routine and they need adequate amount of rest at night.
We take our kids everywhere, but we are always home at bedtime. We take them to nice restaurants and shops and what-not. My kids are well-behaved because they were taught that. They get things taken away... like their books before bed or their classical music at bedtime. Thise are thi things they look forward too. |

Babys can't understand the sermon no matter how simple you make it, 3 year olds, 5-10. What would be a reasonable age. I do agree that if the church is not providing real learning for the kids but just a play time parrents should be finding another church. I would say that atleast 80 percent of all kids under 10 would have a very tough time sitting still and paying attention to an adult preaching about topics related to faith and how it realates to adult life for 30-45 min. Most just sit and play on the floor, make noise and distract the parrents and anyone else near them. You wouldn't stick a young kid in a college class and then just try to make it simpler for them afterwards. You send them to 1st grade first. Age appropriate learning is the best way to teach, and at church is no different. | If kids can sit still in school, then they can at church. If you are saying that they shouldn't be expected to sit still that long, well then, maybe we shouldn't put them in school until they're above ten years old! |

(We have six kids in my family...So, she's been rotating the cycle for seventeen years. She's just finishing that cycle, because she started when my seventeen year old brother was young, and is finishing with my youngest brother, who is two) |

ali | It's not about religion in this case, it's about whether a child should be in church. Don't make a debate were there is none.

| Re: Peoples attitudes I went to wal-mart the other day, and down the toy aisle, there were nothing but kids, no parents in sight. Of course they were all playing with the toys, some of them had opened the toys, two boys were hitting each other with "light sabers" and of course one got hurt and ran off to find his mom which could have been anywhere in that store. I told the nearest employee because I felt it was wrong for all those kids to be in the toy aisle all by themself, looking is okay, but with a proper guardian.
I was also brought up to be very respectful. Its a shame to go out in public and see all these people throwing hissy fits for the silliest reasons. I am never rude, if I am upset with someone then I say what I need to say, but in the nicest way possible. |

| Re: Peoples attitudes I don't know...It seems as if my mom has changed her ways since I was little. I used to get my age in spankings if I threw the slightest tantrum, and now my little brother is throwing huge tantrums, and he just gets sent to his room. I think it probably has something to do with the fact that he's the youngest, but he is getting to be a NIGHTMARE! I keep trying to tell my mom that he needs a spanking, and she thinks that I'm "Power hungry." |

Don't they do that in China already? Only 1 child per household. Hopefully they won't do that here. I have 2 and I couldn't part with either of them.
