Re: Any Guitar Players?

I used to play one of these:

I sold it almost 30 years ago and it is one of my major regrets in life. If you could find one of those, you should buy it. And then you should sell it to me.

Don't let the name - Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean - lull you into thinking this is a country guitar.

I played it so much in high school that some of my friends started calling me Gretsch. That was a source of some confusion since I had a couple of classmates named Gretch (Gretchen) and they were prettier than me.

Have you ever played at all? If not, I don't know where to start. It would be like somebody asking, "What kind of dog should I get?"

Come to think of it, people ask that all the time.

My husband plays drums in a band, but my kids want in on the action... This is my son, Mick with his mini guitar.

That is a fantastic guitar and I totally agree with the "buy on sight" recommendation.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

I don't play myself, but have many professional guitarist friends. But once ya get a little handle on it, I'd recommend checking out these guys:

http://www.ovrdrvn.com

or here:

http://www.myspace.com/ovrdrvn

They're a group of guitarists who make short, instructional videos that they post online for free. They're also available to take questions. Super nice and extremely talented guys, and all styles of music.

What kind of guitar are you getting?

I would be included in this group.

But, you can't go wrong with a Les Paul.

GIBSON

The only thing I don't like about mine is that it weighs a ton. SO if you're just goofing around like me, it's cool, otherwise, hit the gym and build up your shoulders.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

I play, a little.....HAHA. I was really into it for a while, but lost interest. I still pick it up from time to time, but if you stop playing and the caluses go away, it hurts!! I have an electric guitar, but actually prefer playing acoustics or acoustic/electric. I'm sure if I got a guitar I liked playing, I'd probably play a lot more. I just got a cheapo until I decided whether or not I wanted to continue with it, no point spending a fortune on an awesome guitar if it isn't going to get used. But, playing a great guitar over a cheapo makes a HUGE difference.

I started out by picking up a chord chart and just learning chords. Once I knew a few, I just started strumming and swithcing from chord to chord. I'd add a few more once I got the hang of one set of chords. I have friends that play in bands, and they helped me out a lot, they'd come over and give me lessons! But if you don't have someone to who can teach you, sign up for lessons somewhere. Without my buddies, I'd never have made it far. There's only so much you can learn by yourself.

I learned how to play tabs by myself though, the first one being the intro to "Wanted Dead or Alive". That one is actually quite simple! I think my biggest accomplishment and the hardest song I learned was "Blackbird" by the Beatles.

All I can say is be patient. Some people pick it up easily, others take time getting started. Don't expect too much of yourself early on, I think that was my problem.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

I dabbled a bit, and was never really good. I could probably still crank out some ACDC if I tried really hard. I had a Suzuki acoustic, a Fender Telecaster, and an Epiphone Sheraton II (looks similar to RonE's) in vintage sunburst (beautiful, and I miss it).

Guitars can sound different from each other - my Epiphone had a deep, rich sound compared to the crisp sound of the Telecaster. If you're after a particular style of music, you may want to find what works for that.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

Thanks for the replies

I've decided to pick up an electro Acoustic guitar since I fell in love with the acoustic sound. Something like this comes to mind:

Re: Any Guitar Players?

For an electric acoustic, this is my guitar of choice. It's on the expensive side, but purrdy to look at...too bad I struggle at making it play purrdy too.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

I think you are making a great choice in getting the electric accoustic. Great sounds. I fell in love with a Briarwood when I was looking, and it was reasonably priced too. The good thing about them is you can adjust the sound it puts out.

Also remember if you get an amp and distortion pedel, you can play around with the sound even more.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

Congratulations.

Make sure you don't leave it alone for more than a few hours. I recommend crating it to avoid problems when it IS alone. Also, don't forget to socialize it with other guitars from an early age to avoid possible problems with guitar aggression.

Professional training is a big plus and, unless you're going to show it, you'll certainly want to get it neutered as soon as it is old enough.

You don't want a bunch of unwanted mandolins and ukuleles running around.
