I can understand the necessity of having a SWAT team called in if a student has a rifle, but some of those others...are just silly. =3

Nice find. =)

Yeah, but even in the '80's where I came up, many guys had gun racks in their trucks and come hunting season they had guns in them 24/7 and nobody thought anything of it. In fact in MS, you could own a shot gun or rifle at 15 and a handgun at 18. You could also fire ANY of them under the supervision of an adult at 10. At 15, I was a memeber of the Sheriffs Jr Auxillary Marksmanship team and we DIDN'T use pellet guns.

=/

I think that's scary...I'm glad that's not how it is now. I mean...the only reason I understand the "need" for the SWAT for kids with guns is because of the Columbine shooting back in...what, 1998? In Colorado, where I live...I was in my last year of elementary school, and I knew kids who were relatives to those who had died in that deadly shooting that was...

Wow. 7 days until the anniversary of that day, already. I'm not sure why I still feel strongly about April 20th, but...I guess it really affected me and my perception of school security.

Re: School. Then and now...

I was in the 8th grade then and I can vouche for that as truth. Wish we could have times like it again. I would not change when I grew up with anyone. The 50' were wonderful. Someone said they agree with swat team believe me no one was concerned then. Never heard of a school shooting.

What's scary about that? When alot of us were in high school, a kid would never DREAM of taking a gun to school to kill someone. The worst you had to worry about was a fist fight. I WISH it was that way again. Kids had respect for authority, bullies were handled instead of being coddled. Honestly, it's when corporal punishment was taken out of schools that things like school shootings started.

HAHA. That reminded me of:

The Evolution of Teaching Math Since the 1950s
Teaching Math In 1950s:
A logger sells a truck load of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1960s:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100 His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970s:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980s:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990s:
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

Teaching Math In 2000s:
Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

Re: School. Then and now...

In a similar vain, our greatest Naval Admiral - Lord Nelson may have had a more challenging mission at Trafalgar in today's world (there is a wee rude bit in it so don't read if offended):

If Nelson's navy had been subject to today’s regulatory environment, would the Battle of Trafalgar have proceeded more like this?

“Order the signal, Hardy.”

“Aye aye sir.”

“Hold on, that’s not what I dictated to the signal officer. What’s the meaning of this?”

“Sorry sir?”

“England expects every person to do their duty – regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability. What sort of gobbledygook is this?”

“Admiralty policy, I’m afraid sir. We’re an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil’s own job getting England past the censors, lest it be considered racist.”

“Gadzooks Hardy! Hand me my pipe and tobacco.”

“Sorry sir. All naval vessels have been designated smoke-free working environments.”

“In that case break open the rum rations. Let us splice the mainbrace to steel the men before battle.”

“The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. It’s part of the Government’s policy on binge drinking.”

“Good heavens Hardy. I suppose we’d better get on with it. Full speed ahead.”

“I think you’ll find that there’s a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water.”

“Damn it man! We’re on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow’s nest please.”

“That won’t be possible sir,”
”What?”

”Health and safety have closed the crow’s nest sir. No harness. And they say the rope ladder doesn’t meet regulations. They won’t let anyone up there until a proper scaffolding can be erected.”

”Then get me the ship’s carpenter without delay, Hardy.”

”He’s busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the fo’castle Admiral.”

“Wheelchair access? I’ve never heard anything so absurd.”

“Health and safety again sir. We have to provide a barrier free environment for the differently-abled.”

”Differently-abled? I’ve only one arm and one eye and I refuse to have the word mentioned. I didn’t rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card.”

“Actually sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under-represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency.”

”Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons.”

“A couple of problems there too sir. Health and safety won’t let the crew up the rigging without crash helmets. And they don’t want anyone breathing in too much salt – haven’t you seen the adverts?”

”I’ve never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy.”

“The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral.”

“What? This is mutiny.”

”It’s not that sir. It’s just that they’re afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There are a couple of legal aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks.”

“Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?”

”Actually sir, we’re not.”

“We’re not?”

”No sir. The Frenchies and the Spaniards are our European partners now.

According to the Common Fisheries policy we shouldn’t even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit for a claim for compensation.”

”But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil.”

“I wouldn’t let the ship’s diversity co-ordinator hear you saying that sir. You’ll be up on a disciplinary.”

“You must consider every man an enemy who speaks ill of your King.”

”Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest. It’s the rules.”

”Don’t tell me – health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?”

“As I explained sir, rum is off the menu and there’s a ban on corporal punishment.”

“What about sodomy?”

“I believe it’s to be encouraged sir.”

“In that case, kiss me Hardy.”

More like:

1956: Man pulls out a gun with an intention to harm students. Students take out their guns and put the man down.

2007: We all know what happened.

It is funny on the 13th this was posted (I am sure it has been around awhile being it is date 2006).

Then on the 16th we have the double murder..... the school isn't shutdown... the crazy guy goes and kills a lot more people, 30ish... The FBI, SWAT, cops or whoever didn't seem in a hurry to take the guy out which could have saved a many lives.

We are laughing at this list of how "today" is and a couple days later it is very real. We are laughing at how the school gets lockdown just because a guy has a gun in the parking lot and how normal having a gun was back in the day. In the case of VT the lockdown should have happened and there would prolly be 30 people still alive. I am not blaming anyone because I am sure that no one could ever foresee what was going to happen. My point is, while it seems dumb and funny it is in fact actions that we have to live with these days. That isn't funny it is sad.
