A mini-rant about "kids these days"

On our street, everyone is pretty good about always having someone supervise. Every parent knows when they're kid is outside, and we sorta have this neighborhood policy (unofficial, of course) if the group of kids is down by your house, you are watching them. If they come into your house, they have to call home first, to let them know where they are. It works out pretty good. And we have two policemen neighbors, and one fireman, and everyone else we know really well.

ooh thats nice.! I wish we had that type of thing here , we have the knowing everyone in that part of the city thing..almost...but the kid watching..not quite .

Haha, yeah I remember thats how my neighborhood was on Kauai. Thats one thing about that island, everyone knows everyone so nobody really has to watch out about kidnapping. We would go over to a friends house down the street and my friends mom would call us and say our parents wanted us home (me and little sister).

So funny to read about Buffalo Bill! My one year old grabs the front of his shirt with both hands (like BB does in the movie) and I always think - "it puts the lotion in the basket!" But he has no clue what he's doing!

You are right - but it just goes to show how trusting and loving children are. My oldest knows when he sees a dog to first ask me if he can pet it and then the owner of the dog. But one night, a group of young girls came to my door on a scavenger hunt and asked to pet my puppy and I said no - only because I had my baby in one arm and couldn't properly handle my puppy at the time. The dad that was with them said, "well, that's rude" and they left. I would have thought a fellow parent would have been more understanding. But I suppose it goes back to some people are just more trusting or less understanding???????

While we're on the subject...of young kids...

I went down to take my pup down back to the back yard..to the grass to do business...well this little girl and her father (both are very nice ) were having a barbeque.. anyways...I guess maybe the father agreed (or even if not!) she came over to the grass and slightly wanted to pet my puppy.

Now my pup is a jumper.. and doesn't like kids..I mean,shes alright.. but Pepper almost jumped on her..( but i as holding her collar so she couldn't.

)) So I quickly left..I felt bad because I don't think pepper would hurt hurt her...but she would jump and she almost tumbles me over...a 6 year old even more! And scratches....So I quickyl left...the girl seemed displeased..but it was for her and Peppero's own safety....

That was a scaryy exspieriance..

I can see it both ways. If I had been on the scavenger hunt I would have agreed that that wasnt very nice of you, ONLY because it had never occurred to me that you couldnt put the baby down.

And I see what you are saying, you had your hands full. At the door they asked, you had your hands full and said no. You dont want your dog to be out of control, that would be like me letting someone hold my cat unleashed outside. I would never do that (unless it was a very close friend with experience), im not that stupid.

My husband and I are big Silence of the Lamb geeks. He works with his hands, so they're very rough and calloused, so I'm always telling him to "It puts the lotion on the skin!" And, of course, the lotion is kept in a basket in his nightstand.

I think it's funny that this thread has seen more action in the past few days than back in July when I started it.

OMG - Too funny. My BF and I are HUGE Silence of the Lambs geeks too. The phrases; "Hello, Clarice", "Tell me about the lambs..." and "It places the lotion on the skin..." all have different meanings - mostly so we can say them in front of others and not insult. We're nice like that.

maybe it is just the neighborhood in which i live, but i am at the park very regularly and approached almost ever time i am there. it is usually a parent with a child asking if it is ok to pet my dog.

then i hear the story about how boss almost looks like a little great dane. my response is always, "well, his mom is a dane and his dad is a dane, so i think he may end up being a dane when he grows up."

i have yet to take teddy to the park. bulldogs look kind of scary, even though teddy is a big cream puff.

I live about 5 blocks from a large park and decided to take my kids there the other day, I thought Annie might like to come along as well. Well When we got to the park several children tried to approach Annie, she's great with kids but I still got down and watched her because you never know what a strange child might try to do. The sad part is the whole time only one parent actually came and got their child away. My daughters know better than to act like that, they would ask me if it was okay to pet the dog and I would maybe ask the owner depending on the situation. Annie was fine except for one little boy, this boy was about 2 years old and kept coming up and trying to stick his fingers up her butt. I tried to get the boy to leave her alone but I don't think he spoke english and when the father finally came over Annie really went off. For some reason Annie doesn't like Latino's, maybe it's something from her past since we got her from the shelter. Anyhow because of that little boy we ended up leaving the park early and I decided that parks are not a good place to take my Annie any longer

i have a scrap metal biz & sometimes i'm on the street picking stuff up & little kids will come up & talk to me for no reason. i'm a COMPLETE STRANGER & for some reason, these kids feel compelled to say hello. when i was a little kid, which was about 25 years ago, my parents taught me to have a healthy respect for people that you didn't know. i just gruffly say 'don't talk to strangers' & then keep doing my thing. it's probably more than their parents do.
