Re: flu vaccine

Not getting it. I had H1N1 two weeks ago, as did both of my housemates. The one housemate with really bad asthma ended up in the ER and her case was confirmed--we all had the same thing, but she had difficulty breathing.

I spiked a fever overnight on a Wednesday. Fever was 102 Thursday, Friday and Saturday and then slowly came down. Horrible body aches and cough, but strangely little congestion and no sore throat.

Not the worst flu I've ever had, but I sure wouldn't want it again!

I work at an elementary school and I'm sure I got it there and infected my housemates.

Re: flu vaccine

According to this article, young people are most likely to contract H1N1, but people over 50, and obese people are most likely to die from it. The study was done in California, so I don't know how accurate it is for the rest of the country.

Re: flu vaccine

i finally decided to get the vaccine since i am very worried about making my ferrets sick. i will deal with the pain. BUT there is no vaccine for me to get they are sending around permission slips at the schools for them to vaccinate the students and the teachers were supposed to get vaccinated then too, but then they said only students and now they are saying the students will get the vaccines when there are more vaccines. they don't even have vaccines for the students. they have run out. all of my classes have had at least 7-8 students out and up to 12! the parents are getting really nervous. a 36 year old lady died from H1N1 this past weekend. we live in a really small town surrounded by even smaller towns. the parents in our town have been keeping their kids out of school. on monday the elementary school only had 29 students out of 180-ish.

My ferret didn't get it. I mean, I didn't go sneeze on him or anything ( ), but he was exposed. And I've only once had a ferret get a cold from me. So I dunno....maybe they have better immune systems than we do?

Re: flu vaccine

Well, I think my son has the flu now (Fever, headache, body aches) but neither the school nurse nor his pediatrician want him to come in to get tested. They only want to see him if he has trouble breathing or shows signs of strep or ear infection. So, I will be getting the flu any day now or not but, the H1N1 shot isn't even available to me since I am not in a risk group.

I have never gotten a flu shot and I have had the flu once in the past 18 years. I will not get the shot unless, some year, I know I have a weakened immune system, then I may consider it.

Re: flu vaccine

I'm getting the H1N1 shot on Thurs. I never got any flu shots before but being that I'm pregnant my OB highly recommends it so I would rather be safe than sorry. She also wants me to get the regular flu shot as well which i will probably in another week or two.

i don't know about having a better immune system. but, since i live a 2 1/2 hour drive from a vet i won't be taking any chances. a ferret in nebraska died from H1N1 and 3 ferrets in halifax, NS, canada are sick. also, today i found out that the first cat has tested positive for H1N1. i am not as worried about me as i am my pets.

Re: flu vaccine

The cat thing bothers me. I have 6 and 4 of them are seniors. I'm sure I've been exposed already. My daughter was and she's been sick on and off for 2 weeks, I think she may have infection now. I've been taking Cold FX and vitamins hoping to boost the immune system. Too many animals to take care of!!

Re: flu vaccine

i know! it is enough for me to stress about getting it myself but now i have to worry about passing it on to my pets. both my cats are seniors one of me ferrets is a senior and one is just about getting ready to be a senior. AND we are so far from a vet! it doesn't seem to hit a cat as hard as it does a ferret.

The CDC is actually telling us to NOT test people unless they are hospitalized or have some other extenuating reason to test. There are a few reasons that they're giving: (1)the test used by most hospitals and doctors offices is very inaccurate so the swabs have to be sent to a reference lab, (2) The reference labs have been overwhelmed by the swabs, (3) all of the tests so far are positive only for H1N1, not the seasonal flu, so a clinical diagnosis is sufficient.

Re: flu vaccine

That's good you had no reaction. My sister was helping out at one of the flu clinics and a little boy about 9 years old got immediately very ill from the shot. My nephews wife who is a pharmacist won't get the vaccine. She feels there isn't enough research done on it. Very hard decision when people have young kids at home. Hopefully this all will pass soon

Re: flu vaccine

Kids and DH will likely (DH def) get the flu and swine flu shot. As for me, it depends on whether my doctors reccommend it. Most vax don't stick in my system. ie in the past 11 years I've had the MMR shot 8 times. So, it just depends. But dh will get it since he's military and the kids, as soon as I can get them seen by their doctor.

Interesting....how do they know the vaccines didn't take for you? Did they run titers? I have no idea how I'd know if my MMR vaccines took or not.

I'm not actually afraid of needles. They can take blood all they want. I just have an irrational fear of them putting something IN me. I really need to get a tetanus booster (tetanus is BAD, definitely worth keeping current on), but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Re: flu vaccine

Not going to get it. Don't get the regular flu shot, so i don't feel the need to start now. I can't even remember the last time i've had the flu... Anytime that i've been sick and have gone to the doctor, i've always tested negative.

I'm not getting the H1N1 shot or the flu shot. I'm terrified of needles and I just can't face that fear.

Same here. Worked in health care, required to get hepatitis vax. No titer after the typical three shots. Got another booster, negative titer again. Yet another booster, still couldn't detect antibodies. Pathologist decided I didn't need to be tortured any further and declared me immune.

Flu shots...our county in NV is giving out H1N1, one rotating day per week and only at the county health office, on a person's word that they fall into a high-risk category. So there is nothing at this time for those of us who are not in those categories unless you're not telling the truth. The smaller, rural counties around us all have enough for anyone who wants the shot. But you have to prove residency.

Since I work at an elementary school right now I get to see attendance stats. Within a few weeks after school started in August we had tons of kids out in Sept and early Oct with "flu-like symptoms" according to pediatricians if parents sought medical attention. However we never reached epidemic numbers and we are now having pretty typical attendance stats. Many more than normal have been taking kids out for dr appointments to get flu shots though, since kids fall into the high-risk category and SOME pediatricians have vax's to give, especially for kids with asthma or other chronic illnesses.

Just read an interesting article in some medical mag about how Britain is handling things. They have almost all of their high-risk population vaccinated since the end of September. Because they have a more socialized medical situation, the doctors all have medical records digitized for the patients they are responsible for...had the computer do a query and, voila! a list of those patients needing a phone reminder to come in for a shot on a priority basis. And then they have been able to supply the less high-risk patients with the leftovers.

We have all had the seasonal flu shot in our household and would get the H1N1 if we could. But the only one eligible is our college-aged daughter. However, the county clinic days have yet to coincide with a day that she can sit down there waiting for 7 hours in line for the shot. So it looks like we will be winging it on H1N1.

Re: flu vaccine

I am not going to get the swine flu vaccine. I would like to think if i get it, I will build my immunity to future strains. I had encephalitis as a child and as I grew older and researched it I feel special having an immunity to it. ( i know its only for certain strains but what the hay.)Plus I been reading about some things that I dont want to put myself through. Even the chances are VERY rare for me to have any adverse effects, I still dont want to chance that.

Re: flu vaccine

my son got both flu shots yesterday. HE is fine just a tad cranky, which is usual for him after a shot. I am in the category that shoudl have the shots(I have asthma and a low immune system, i had pneumonia when i was born and it affected my immune system since then.), my two year old is also in the catergory to get it, she got severly sick last year and lost alot of weight(by the end of winter she was only 20lbs). As with all vaccines there are risks and benefits. I had a reaction to some vaccine at basic training I ended up out cold on the floor shortly after getting them all, all i remember is talking to my friend then waking up with him carrying me to the emergency area.
