Feeling a little down.

So I went to Brooklyn to visit my older sister this past weekend. She and I used to live together outside of Boston until she finished her grad school program. Then she went to Brooklyn and I'm still outside of Boston. Our parents and little sister live in Georgia. Lately, I've found that I'm seriously homesick and seriously contemplating a move home. Visiting my sister this weekend really made me homesick. It doesn't matter how much fun I'm having or how good my friends are up here, there's nothing like family. And I've been living away from mine for about 7 years.

I wish I was still in Brooklyn watching TV in my sister's tiny apartment. I wish I was in Central Park enjoying the sites and sounds of the city. I wish I was in Battery Park looking at the Statue of Liberty. I wish I had a chance to adopt the dog I met in Battery Park (refer to Puppy Love thread in the General Forum). Most of all I wish I had family near me.

Well just wanted to vent, thanks for listening DFers.

P.S. Have also thought about moving to NYC, anybody here live there?

Re: Feeling a little down.

Where outside of Boston do you live?

I am from MA and I packed up and moved across country almost 2 years ago. Literally saved up quit my job and drove across country with a friend to live in LA. I guess I just needed a change of scenery.

For me I love change and working out situations.

If you don't mind me asking. How old are you? Living away from home for 7years was it for college or did you move to live there for work?

No shame in that.

I went from California to Massachusetts for college. Loved the college, loved my roommate, loved the boyfriend I met there, loved the weather, missed my family. I came back after two years and graduated from a college about fifteen minutes from my parents' house.

I don't live with them anymore, but I'm in the same city and Alvin and I are over at their house for dinner at least once a week. We go to church together as a family. It's not just my parents, either...my aunt and uncle are about half an hour away and my cousins have kids that I am enjoying watching grow up.

I don't love Los Angeles, but I'd rather live near my family than in a city that I love.

Scotty,
I'm 25, will be 26 in November. My sister and I lived in Somerville for 2 years and I just finished up my first year in South Boston. The 7 years includes college, went to four years of school in New Hampshire (was home for holidays but not for summers) and then I was home for a month after graduation and then moved back up with 2 job interviews lined up (I'm a nurse). I can definitely understand and respect you picking up and moving, I am feeling the itch too, but the itch to move back to the Atlanta area.

Fillebelle,
I completely understand how you feel. I love my job and my friends here in Boston (although the job, not so much lately) but I know that I'll at least find a semi decent job wherever I go and I can make friends wherever I go. But my family isn't everywhere and they do mean everything to me.

I go into a funk everytime I see a family member and then we have to say goodbye. I'll get over it in a few days, it's just hard to say goodbye.

I feel like I'm at a crossroads and there are a couple of options in front of me and I'm trying desperately to figure out where I want my life to go next. It is stressful!

Re: Feeling a little down.

Yea it can be hard. I do love my family but I like not having them in my backyard. To each his (or her) own.

I am only 26. I moved across country with no job lined up and almost no place to live. I had friends drop the ball on finding an apartment.

As old as you can feel at 26, and feel like you need to have your life together right now, we still have a long road ahead of us. If you have good references and have no fear about getting or retaining a job, and you think moving is a good idea and what you need, I say go for it.

Better to do it now when you are still fresh out of college and don't have much tying you down than to realize you wanted it all along and are stuck in Southie cuz of children, family, work or what have you.

Re: Feeling a little down.

I definitely agree. I think that's why I'm starting to feel a little anxious about it. I'm feeling like the longer I stay up here the more settled I will get and eventually (hopefully) there will be a marriage and kids and then I doubt a move like that would happen. If I do it now it only affects me. And if I hate it I just move back up here. At least if I try it I'll really know where I want to be.

Re: Feeling a little down.

Exactly! That is why I did what I did when I did it.

If LA wasn't for me or I had no luck finding a job I knew I could always move back to MA. Two years in I know I still have that option, even though I don't see myself doing so.

Not having to ever shovel my car out of a snowbank and still being able to snowboard in the winter as well as go to the beach is pretty amazing

Re: Feeling a little down.

I HATE shoveling snow! So awful. I'm dreading winter. I'm glad your move has worked out so well, hopefully if I move I'll be just as happy.

Pickleisaminidaschi is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Feeling a little down.

I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you should move closer to where your parents and little sister lives. I've never lived in New York, or been there, but I've heard good things about it.

Re: Feeling a little down.

Thanks for the support guys and the virtual hugs. If I had a dog I'd automatically feel better! Dogs are like that.
