the antitheft system in our aveo went 2 times! both times they footed the bill. the first time was within the original warranty and the 2nd time was in the extended warranty time. we bought the extended warranty that covered the wiring since the wiring was crap in that car! the car was brand new when we got it. we had it only 4 years.

also, like i said before, the airbag wiring went 2 times, the wiring to the lights (head lights, brake lights) went again and again. the wiring for the power locks went. we were out shoveling TONS of snow and we had the car warming up. the apt door was locked and the keys were on the ring with the car key and the doors locked themselves! we were freezing and tired and locked out of the car and the apt! we had to call our landlord to come and let us in the apt to get my keys. i guess i should have had my keys too but i didn't figure i would need them! we had the car at the garage numerous times to get the lock issue fixed but they thought i was crazy. finally one day i was picking up the car from the garage for another issue and i put the keys in the ignition and turned it and the doors locked. i turned off the car and marched right back in the garage and made the manager come out and try it. finally they believed me. there were so many wiring issues.

there was a point one summer when the car was in the garage every single week for 7 weeks in a row. i HATED that car. i also hated the gm garage that we went to. they always looked at me like i was crazy and thought i was complaining about nothing. the bushings were replaced every 1 1/2 - 2 months. they didn't keep them in stock...

and that is not the best of it all! we had it in for an oil change on thursday and my husband drove the car to work on friday (my husband had a 120 km (75 mile) commute each way then) and on the way home the oil light was coming on, but it was only flicking on and off so we thought it was another wiring issue (we were having a serious wiring issue at the time - but the garage couldn't find the problem...). by the time my husband pulled into the driveway it sounded like he was driving a tank. it was friday evening, after the garage was closed, and we were stuck without a car all weekend. and what happened...the guy who did the oil change didn't screw the nut on on the bottom tight enough and all the oil ran out of the car!! and then they had the nerve to blame us! they asked where we got our last oil change. my dh told them "here! last week!!"

like you said gm and i are done! this was our first and only gm car.

sorry for the giant rant! i hate gm and i hate that car.

Re: Need some car recommendations please

The first car I had was a 72 Chevy. It drank oil as ancient cars are ought to do sometimes, but aside from that I had no problems with it. I had a 5 year old Pontiac after that that I had no issues with. But there is a reason why GM has been bailed out and foreign auto makers are doing just fine.

I have personally, had piss poor dealings with the local VW dealer to the point I would never buy a VW again.

BTW I love the Aveo story and am glad it is not my car! Leave the windows down enough to get into the car and unlock the door if you have auto door locks. My Saturn is famous for sneaky door locking when you are not looking and that is with the car OFF....

Check on line for issues with whatever model you look at for issues.. and keep Brutus off the computer (and you say he can't learn???????? Can't or won't??? )

Waste Management here is going to have an Auction of used Garbage trucks.. you can always 'pick up' a few extra $$ with one of those and think how HAPPY Brutus will be!

Ya know we love you and your dogs Hulk.

yeah, we really should have thought through the leaving the car running with the apt door locked thing... not one of our best moments!

when we went in to buy the extended warranty the lady who worked for gm was telling us about her sister's aveo that had messed up power windows. they would go down at any time.

i don't think i have to repeat - do not ever buy an aveo!

it is funny, my sister has an old saturn, maybe 99?, and she never has any issues with it other than regular maintenance. (knock on wood!)
