"Women cant be scientists."

now what the heck do you say to some ignorant crap like that?

how does one respond?

this guy in one of my classes is a BLATENT SEXIST.

He says im deluding myself being a single(read in his mind "slut") mom, 25 and going back to school to study science.

he says it will never work and ill fail.

I know that's bs..but I just want to SAY SOMETHING. the quieter I am the more he goes off at me!

I told the prof. but he isn't doing it in any against regulation manner. he's just quietly "stating his opinion"

How do I respond?

Sounds like a compensatory comment if you know what I mean.

I would have responded in either of two ways...standing up in class and making a mockery of him in front of the class, or moved my seat. I miss people being made a mockery of for such comments.

Re: "Women cant be scientists."

I feel ya. I am in a very male saturated hobby... cars. I know more than quite a few of my guy friends, and oh boy, some get flustered about it, and on the other hand, some of them are very impressed by it. The "old school" guys, aka the old farts that don't think women know their head from their you-know-what, REALLY seem to give me a hard time. What do I do? I kindly set them straight by showing my superior intellect.

In the long run, there's not much you can do about a closed minded person, unfortunately.

Re: "Women cant be scientists."

I found a...forum, yesterday (won't say, since it's a touchy subject here, lol), but MAN, the men on that forum were SO sexist. A man had posted a new thread, saying he'd caught his wife doing what he suspected was self...uh...satisfying herself in the shower, and he said he had beat her and wondered what else he should do. He already never let her leave the house without his express permission, and didn't let her have any outside contact with anyone. He said since she was carrying his child, he had gone a bit easier on her beatings, and everyone on that forum said, NO, beat her more! Take away the showerhead, make her take baths, etc.

It was absolutely disgusting, and I can't believe women still put up and even believe that ****.

And on other forums, such as anime forums, I get a lot of flack for being a woman, interested in anime and video games. The boys used to harass me a lot, until I stopped going. I'm sure they sill mess and make sexist remarks, though.

stop sitting within earshot of him? if you stop sitting anywhere near him and he SEEKS YOU OUT to continue saying these things i'm pretty sure thats harassment and then just make a complaint with the campus police just to get it in the paperwork. they might not do anything about it except tell him to quit it but even that might do the trick.

Pretend to break down, and then say, is that what you want? Because it won't happen, now if you'll kindly be quiet so I can continue to excel over you in every intellectual area. lol

I'd do it...

I'd just try to ignore it, personally. The class will be over soon and you will get a great job because you seem like a nice person, and he'll get fired from his for harrassing women on the job

That situation really sucks, but by responding in kind, you'll just be sinking down to his level. In that situation, I'd probably ignore him totally, like he wasn't even there, walk away and report him each and every time. I'd also see if I could move seats, try to avoid him on breaks, and then study my heart out. Success is the best revenge.

How do you respond? I would laugh in his face! !! I would NEVER let him know that he got to me. You're giving him power if you do that. I'd probably say something like, "Women ARE scientists, honey, anomaly or not. Women can be scientists and women can have babies. Sorry about that. LOL"

Memorize some of this list and rattle them off. And then lick your lips seductively, wink and walk away.

List of Women Scientists

Re: "Women cant be scientists."

There really isn't any use arguing with these people, because even if you prove them wrong they have some nonsense response for why that "really" is. I'm a girl with a lot of tattoos. I catch crap all the time, including not being allowed at my dad's office because my uncle thinks I'm disgusting. I offer an eye roll, or take any opportunity for a funny comment. My favorite incident when a man came into my work and was really short with me. He then stated, for whatever reason, that he hopes his daughter doesn't end up looking like me. My response? "I hope MY daughter doesn't end up looking like YOU."

Men like that I don't want in my world of science.

I am female. And I am a scientist. And the world of clinical laboratory science is dominated by females (which has done a 180 from the late 70s where it was mostly men!!).

You can't argue with an idiot like that. Just keep studying what you love.

he's in engineering...and when I mentioned id been debating on my major for a while(as far as science is concerned im completely torn between biology and physics..I love them both.) so when I said the word "physics" is when he said that. and while physics is fairly male dominated it doesn't mean there aren't women in the field.

I do have to take some physics classes even though ive(pretty much) decided on biology(might take a second run through college for a physics degree..because I CAN na na ne boo boo)..I hope he's in them.

I will sooooo kick his butt in euclidean geometry.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I'm currently studying criminal justice which while not as bad as it used to be, can still come off as a bit of a 'boys club'.

As others have said though, the best way to show up the naysayers is to do better then them in every way possible
