Fashion Vent

I am not a big fashionista or anything. I mean, I like to try to look cute as much as most girls, but I don't spend a lot of time or money doing it. Anyway, I know the fashion world is all about making money, but it's becoming more and more obvious with each passing year. The turnaround on things is becoming faster and faster-- you know, the seventies came back in, and then the eighties came back in, etc. Remember how you didn't see any gold jewelry for about a decade until 4 or 5 years ago? And then it came back in a HUGE way. And now silver's back 'in'. And the creepy wicked-witch-of-the-west pointed shoes that were big about 3 or 4 years ago? I was reading a magazine recently that said they were back! Huh? They're "back"?... after, what... 2 years? I didn't even realize they went away. I don't know how many times I've picked up a magazine that said "brown is back" or "black is back"--- do those colors ever really go out? I think not. It seems that something is in, and then the next year or so the exact opposite thing is in.. pointed shoes/round shoes, gold/silver, short skirts/long skirts, tight shirts/potato-sack-like shirts. Just as soon as all the suckers throw out the "out" stuff so they can fit in with the "in" stuff, that stuff that was "out" is hot again. So they have to go back to the stores and buy more, which of course means dolla's in the pockets of the "geniuses" who make the rules.
And it's NOT just fashion, either. You know how suddenly over the past few years everyone started taking their wallpaper down and painting their homes all kinds of colors? I've just been waiting for wallpaper to become the "new" hot thing again... just turn on any of those home shows and you'll see some designer touting wallpaper like it's the best thing since... avocado green toilets? (Yeah, those are cute now, too.) The wallpaper people weren't doing so well for awhile, but they knew they were sitting on a gold mine. All they had to do was wait for someone to decide that it was the thing again.
The saddest part of all is that there are people out there who literally buy into all of this stuff and try to keep up with it.

Re: Fashion Vent

LOL Rubesmom.. your post made me smile. I was just thinking about this the other day! =)

First of all, I honestly dont want to see the WALLPAPER coming back... I remember almost breaking my back when I had to tear down the wallpaper on my Aunt's house. It wasn't fun at all!

I am a little bit of a fashionista. I would've been a bigger one if I have the money. Unfortunately, to dress fashionably these days, you have to be "rich" like Paris Hilton.

I doubt "black" will ever go away. Its the safest way to dress yourself. However, there are some people who believes that black clothing make them look skinny... NOT! It depends on the style and cut of the clothes/dress/shirt/pants and of course wearing the right under garments (which means they fit just right!). Black can never hide the muffin tops, the saggy bust and the layer of fat spilling out of tight bras.

But, if you are not sure of what color to wear, black is always the way to go. Half of the content of my closet is black. The other half is assorted colors and styles. I wasn't born in the 70's but it seems "my fashion" sense is trapped in that era! I dont complain though. 70's fashion is just like the color black. It will never go away. It may evolve but it is here to stay.

And yes, I agree. I also dislike the fact that there are certain people who decides what's IN and what's NOT these days. For me, what's in is whatever I am in the mood to wear on a certain day. What's NOT IN, is those pants and shirts which now has countless holes and stitches and has seen better days. LOL!

Re: Fashion Vent

Well, Mudra, I'm glad I could make someone smile today! I must admit I'm getting older (30 in October!) and while I love some things that may be too young for me (graphic tees, ringer tees, that's all I can think of off the top of my head), there have been plenty of fashion trends over the past few years that I just cannot stand-- the peasant skirts, the pointed shoes, the ballet pants, to name a few. Oh, and that weird thing that chicks are doing with their hair these days-- putting it into a ponytail and deliberately making a big messy bump of hair on top? What's up with that? I've always tried to AVOID that messy hair bump. Are they trying to be taller? I guess I'm tall enough (5' 9") that I don't feel it's necessary?
I agree about black not always making people look skinny -- white is supposed to make people look bigger, but that's not always true either.

Re: Fashion Vent

LOL are you talking about the beehive hair which WINO is sporting these days? I can't stand it either. When it comes to hair, I am more into the traditional way of styling my hair. A little boring some would say, but I'd rather look boring than ridiculous!

I am 28 and I sometimes mistaken for a teenager. I dont know if its the clothes I wear or I just am lucky for being ASIAN. I always have to try harder to look my age especially during DH's xmas party. His co-workers teased him for being a cradle snatcher.

Fashion wise, I only buy clothes from stores that carries my size and style. I am only 5ft tall and my size is mostly carried by children clothing stores!!! Even the XSmall sizes on petite clothing stores feels like medium sizes to me. Dont get me started with pants. All of my pants are at least 6-7 inches longer, thank goodness for seamstress. I cant buy clothes on children section either because their cut is way different from a grown woman (body wise not height wise LOL!) with curves and all.

White and black are my favorite color. I just use colored accesories to make myself look trendy and hip while wearing plain white/black. Like red/pink/blue/green scarf or necklaces or belts. Its funny how by just changing the color of your accesories while wearing the same outfit makes people think you are wearing something new!

Try being in your 40's but on the inside still feeling like you're in your 20's! There is nothing for me to wear. I am not ready for matronly but I am definitely not going to look foolish in all the new styles. So, I stick to boring clothes in fun colors. It's a sorry compromise.

There is alot for you to wear. You just need to find your "inner" fashion style. I know someone who is in her 40s, who dresses very hip yet very in her age. Like I previously said, you can wear plain color clothes and just match them with colored accessories to make them COME TO LIFE.

Re: Fashion Vent

This is why I am happy to be a jeans and fitted t-shirt kind of girl. I will be 30 on my next b-day and can still wear clothes that I have had for years because my "style" hasn't changed based on what the fashion people say. I am a stay home mom, a wife and a dog lover that wears Boxer slobber as an accessory most days, so I dress in a way that fits my lifestyle. Now, I do not dress like a frumpy house-frau, but I really don't give a rats patootie if I am wearing what is "IN". If I like something, and I think it is cute, I will buy it, I won't go out and buy something just because In Style magazine has some celeb wearing it on the cover of the June issue... Now, I have several friends that are very into fashion (one who is a fashion designer for some big names in the music industry) and I will say I love browsing through all the posh shops in Nashville with her, but very seldom do I see or find anything that to me is worth buying because I am practical and I think "where and when would I wear that???" and the answers are "nowhere and never".. LOL Now, I will say my one "splurge" would be jeans because I have a hard time finding jeans that fit me just right. I love Silver jeans and they are not cheap, but I get my money's worth out of them for sure.

If they do, then I'm in trouble. Fortunately, I don't care! Benefit of getting old, I guess.

Whether it's my clothes or my house or my car...I buy what I like and screw everyone else. They don't have to wear my clothes, live in my house or pay for my car.

(OP: excellent rant and very true)

Re: Fashion Vent

try being in style while pregnant LOL!! I got to a point where all I was wearing was mumu dresses and yoga pants with baggy t shirts. Normally I wouldn't go out in public in that stuff (well except yoga pants maybe for doing groceries etc).

I can never stay in fashion. Whenever I try to follow the trends I end up failing miserably and feeling silly. So I just buy classic stuff that I like and go with that. And hey... my favorite classic white sleeveless fitted top with the rose print on it has been getting compliments for about 7 years now!

Re: Fashion Vent

Mudra, I guess by WINO you are talking about Amy Winehouse? Just a guess... I'm not hip enough to know for sure... But as far as the leg length goes, I have the opposite problem. I can't find pants that are long ENOUGH. Don't get me wrong, I like having long legs, but when even my BF is telling me that my pants look like high waters, that's an issue. I like to wear heels sometimes, too, but forget wearing heels with pants, because even if the pants ARE long enough, the heels cancel it out.

MegaMuttMom, I feel you. I'm only almost 30, but I still feel 21. I think when I'm in my 40s I'll still feel much younger. This is a good thing, in my opinion, but I hope I'll always have the werewithal to make good judgments fashion-wise. I don't wanna be the fifty-something wearing skin-tight leather minis and halters and stilettos. I definitely agree that you can be fashionable at any age, though. I'm still trying to convince my 65-yr old mom that she can wear dark jeans and look hip and at the same time not too casual.

That's great-- I also have stuff that is about 5 - 10 years old and no one knows the difference. I just have things that I've fallen in love with over the years and can't bear to let go of, whether it's because I think my future daughter might wear it or I might wear it again. I have some skirts that I bought at Forever21 about 7 or 8 years ago (for less than $20!!), and I still wear them today.

Oh, man, I always tell myself that I look way hotter in my jeans and t-shirts than all those other bisatches in their high fashion crap, and it took me WAY less time to get ready, too. Seriously, that fashion crap is more for other women than it is for men, no matter where on the planet you go. ...

Re: Fashion Vent

Men here also dress up and have super duper hair dos, much much different than in North America, Germany or even the rest of France

Anyways I'd rather stick to black T-shirts, varsity hoody and jeans with my hair tied up

Re: Fashion Vent

Here everything is ovepriced compared to the prices in Canada or the USA, no shopping mall, no wall-mart,target, zellers or any kind of stores like that. So your in tie, everyone looks super duper good but clothes are way too expensive The prices have the same numbers but they're in Euros so 1.6 times more expensive for us. Can't wait for tommorow to go back to Canada for 3 weeks (with maybe a trip to Atlanta ) and shop a bit

Re: Fashion Vent

I only shop if the store is doing 70% off the last ticketed price. LOL! I dont believe that "expensive" clothes make you look "classy". Its how you carry yourself no matter what you wear and how much they cost. I dont let the clothes wear me. I WEAR THE CLOTHES.

And yes Rubesmom, WINO is for amy winehouse..

Guess what girls, here discounts may be only happen bi-yearly, it's the law. And the mark off is only a lousy 30% in most places
