Angry People who don't watch their kids!

A little vent here:

Today after work, I went to McDonald's to get a drink (I was dying of thirst). I got my drink and I turned around to leave and I see this little girl, she was maybe around 3 years old, if that. She had her hands full carrying 2 boxes of Chicken McNuggets and she's barefoot. Also, she struggling to open the doors to the exit and looks about ready to cry. I'm kind of looking around for a parent of some sort in the dining area who SHOULD care that their little girl is getting ready to run outside in McDonald's parking lot. No one is paying attention. So I go up to the door and as soon as I get there, the little girl says, "I lost my sandals. I forgot them." I asked her where she left them and she said she forgot them in the play area and asked if I would help her. I said ok...still looking around for a parent to come to the kids rescue. So I take her back to the play area...wondering what in the HELL am I going to do with this kid?? At this point I didn't feel comfortable leaving her until a parent or SOMEONE showed up. I asked her who she came with and she said that she came with her "Grandma". I asked her if she knew where her Grandma was? and she didn't answer me. I'm helping her with her sandals and taking my time about it too because I was trying to think of what to do and FINALLY this older woman shows up and I asked her if she was the girls grandmother. She said that she was. I told her that the girl was trying to leave and almost made it to the parking lot. She said that she had to leave to put the "other two" in the car! So it just got better by admitting that she just left two other kids UNSUPERVISED in a vehicle. I can't believe this woman left a little girl ALONE in a crowded McDonald's then left two other little kids alone in a vehicle while she came back in. AND she didn't look worried in the least that this girl was talking to a stranger. Doesn't she realize that ANYONE could have came in and took this kid and left using the other exit on the other side of the restaurant?? I don't know...if it were my kids I would have been super PO'd to find out that my kids "grandmother" left my kid unsupervised in a crowded restaurant and didn't seem to be in a hurry to come back to get her.

There was no reason why she couldn't have take this little girl when she took the other two to the car. She was able to walk and she wasn't even holding the little girls hand anyway when they left right after I did. I honestly don't understand why she left her inside. It was SO incredibly dangerous. I just don't get people sometimes...I mean, would any of you who are parents actually do that??

Re: People who don't watch their kids!

Your right SDO--you can't trust anyone these days. I don't understand what this woman was thinking...well obviously she wasn't thinking. I just wonder if the kids' parents realize how careless the grandmother is with the kids'? Like I said, if it were me...I'd be absolutely livid. I don't know...at my job I work with kids that require 24 hr eyes on supervision...they can't ever be left in a room alone...even the bathroom, they literally have 1 person in the same room with them 24/7...even when they are sleeping. That tends to bleed over even when I'm around typical kids like my nieces and nephews...I always have to know where they are and what they are doing...my eyes are always "on" them...and they are 9 and 10 year old typical kids! lol It just boggles my mind. I mean, a person just can't leave kids alone like that...the kid was upset and on the verge on a tantrum (believe me, I know the beginning of a tantrum when I see it. LOL). If she would have had a meltdown...it isn't right that she was left alone to disturb other customers either...She just shouldn't have been left alone period!

Re: People who don't watch their kids!

I see kids running loose all the time in public areas. I always end up with some 2-year-old attached to my cart at Wal-Mart, with no parents in sight. Honestly, if I couldn't keep my kid in sight (some kids run off, I know), I'd put a leash on him. I love those little animal backpacks with a long "tail" on them, those are great for crowds, and the kid doesn't feel like a leashed dog. But really.....if they want to have kids, they need to take responsibility for them, just like having pets.

If I had kids, I'd rather push my four year old in a stroller all day than have her wonder off into traffic when my back's turned.

You made an excellent point! People always say that those who are seeking child targets usually scope out areas where kids are known to be, like playgrounds. Well, McDonald's is most kids' favorite place to eat and there are always tons of kids running around. Some peoples carelessness is just astounding!

Well the little girl is lucky you helped her rather than some "stranger" that could of led to something worse.

I would LOVE to just slap parents, guardians, whomever who are not watching their kids!!! I just watched a clip in CNN about a dad who passed out in his car with three kids in the back with no seat belts, he was drunk and on drugs. Then the g/f of the dad stated what a "great" dad he was!

What the h*ll is the world coming to!!!

Mdawn, I commend you for what you did for the child, but I probably wouldnt have been able not to give Grandma an earfull.

Part of the problem of "Pedo Paranoia" is Chris Hansen.

Last year I saw a young girl, 10 years old or younger, angrily hitchhiking down the Parks Highway, Im ashamed to say I didnt stop, get her in my car and call 911. I called 911 from my cell and gave them her location and direction of travel and kept going. I succumbed to a form of "Pedo Paranoia", I didnt want to be viewed as one.

Re: People who don't watch their kids!

While I appreciate people saying that I did a good thing...but I did what only people should do and what most "normal" people would do. Nothing special.

Anyway, it was a weird, disturbing experience. It left me with a nasty feeling the rest of the day. I have a feeling that this girls family or at least grandma is one of those people who believe bad things can't happen to them or those that they love (or those that they are supposed to love at any rate). It just a sad thing all around. I hope that nothing bad happens to this little girl in the future because grandma is so careless.

I just don't understand why some people are so nonchalant about protecting their kids. It is sad that as a parent I have to be paranoid, but we live in the real, scary world and we can NEVER be to cautious when it comes to our precious children. My son is almost 9 and it is so hard to find the balance of giving him more independence and responsibility without ever putting him in danger. I watch him like a hawk, I am super careful about who he plays with or is exposed to, because you just never know. It is sad, but you really cannot trust people.

Yeah, I should have...I did tell her that the girl almost made it to the parking lot, thinking that she'd feel guilty or something, but she didn't seem concerned.

Well, being older, she probably thought that kidnapping isn't a big thing, 'cause it wasn't in her time. still...
