| Im off to my first day of internship!! Here I go finally! Katzyn and I are going to the same place for internship! Im a little nervous but not too much because the guy we are working for is really nice. It's a Banfield which I know isnt the greatest but this Banfield is definatly one of the best (just from observing thats what it looks like, we will see though). I get to bike ride there this morning, it's 4 miles away and I enjoy it. |

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! It was AWESOME!! Wow, I had so much fun! We got along great with all the staff and jumped in with anything/everything that we could. First thing I did was draw some blood from a dog, I drew blood another time too. I cut a Weimeraner's nails (First time cutting a dogs nails!). Then I helped out with 2 surgeries, watching the ECG machine and pulse oximeter, I answered a couple questions they asked. I gave 2 SQ injections to a dog. Mixed up some vaccines and put them in syringes. I went in the rooms with my "boss" a few times and watched him talk to the clients. We even saw a guinea pig today, the poor girl had neurological signs (head tilt and her eyes continuously moved back and forth). We saw one lady who brought her dog in for vaccines but they couldnt give them right away because she had left her dog in the car for 3 hours while she was in a nail salon The dog was too hot! A ferret came in and had to be euthanized because he couldnt be helped medically. There was another euthanasia too, a pretty tortoiseshell cat That was sad but part of the job. I learned how to use their autoclave (sterilizes instruments), I wrapped a pack to be autoclaved (folded some gowns!). We also saw some ear mites on the microscope (too numerous to count!) and a louse (lice). I also cleaned a bunch of metal kennels.
And yes, I am exhausted! But I am very happy, the only thing that could make this better is if I were being paid. I LOVE it!!

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! OMG. IT WAS SOOOOO FUN. XD
I was so exhausted when I got home, though, I didn't even go on the internet. XD
When I got home and saw Newbie, my sister's tortie cat, I almost cried. I felt so bad for the woman at the clinic, who had to put down her tortie cat.
I did lots of blood draws, restraining, and fecals exams. I didn't want to do the surgeries, like SLK. XD Then, we had to clean all the instruments, and that was boring, but it gave us time to relax.
Oh, and there was a little dog who had grass awns (aka, "seeds") stuck in his foot, one of which caused a large, red/purple abcess, (between his toes on a front paw) which had to be lanced and drained/cleaned. Ohh, that poor dog. I can't imagine the pain he must have been in, walking on that foot. I hope he's feeling better today. =) |

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! Sooo, today was a very busy day as well, had some interesting things happen. I again drew blood a few times, I even got one vein on the first stick A cat came in who couldnt pee, he was blocked and we had to unblock him. I got to restrain him, I like restraining because then Im not just watching Im also holding/touching the animal. We took radiographs of him hooked him up to some fluids overnight, I hope he is much better tomorrow when I get there. I gave that cat (his name is Bulletz) 1.5 ml's of Clavamox orally, he is a very good cat and didnt fight at all. I got to restrain a Chihuahua for a few radiographs. I did a lot of cleaning of kennels, laundry and wiping down dirty tables. I went into I think only 1 room today, I need to do more then that tomorrow.
Poor Kat though, she brought her bird in to get a free exam from one of the doctors. We ended up cutting the band around her (CC, the bird) foot off. The band was so thick that they couldnt use any scissors that we had so the Doctor used a dremel to get it off. The dremel slipped and cut CC's leg and she bled a lot. Birds dont have much blood so it is a big problem if they bleed. CC seemed to be ok when she went home tonight, I hope she is all right.
We also did a urine analysis on a dog who had a urine specific gravity of 1.011 which is in the renal failure range. We suspect it is artifact (not really renal failure) because the dog is only 3 years old and had dilute urine. We wanted to do blood work to check and make sure it wasnt renal failure but we had already sent the dog home without drawing blood.
10 hour days is hard, I dont know if I could handle taking care of a dog if I worked 10 hour days I wake up early to get to work and get home in the evening very tired and want to go to sleep....I dont even really have time to train with my cats. But then I only work 4 days a week then I have 3 days of nothing to do but spend time with a dog. Of course this isnt where I will be working after I graduate so who knows if I will be working 10 hour day shifts. |

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! I think Sierra (my bird) is okay...We had to put a little bird-sized E-collar on her, so she would stop messing with the bandage we put on her leg, so she's very upset, and can't eat unless I hand her pieces of food, and even then, she just takes the food, then drops it. I just checked her leg a moment ago, and it looked as if it might be bleeding a tiny bit, but it's hard to tell, so I'll be checking her again in a few minutes, with a stonger light. She is very, very upset and refuses to even try to use the bandaged leg, so she's moving around the cat carrier using her good leg, her beak, and her wings. I feel sooooo bad for her....
But other than that, yes, today was very exciting and fun, even though I was feeling a bit "off" all day. |

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! SLK I am so happy for you. It sounds like you are learning so much. I feel like your big sister, hehe, Ok, your mom, but who is counting. LOL Keep your empathy and compassion for each of the animals even when it gets crazy and you are tired. I just can tell you are going to be great at this. Good luck to you. |

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! Ugh, I was right, she's been thrashing around so much that she started bleeding again, so my dad and I replaced the bandage. She's resting in my lap right now... |

| Re: Im off to my first day of internship!! Well, I put her in a little basket on my bed for the night, which has a towel in it and over it, so it's warm and dark. She's been taking water from a little dropper, and has been sleeping most of the time. I just removed the bandage (I was afraid it was too tight) and there's no bleeding.
I think she'll be okay. She just needs to get past this and tomorrow, and I'm sure she'll be fine.
EDIT~~She didn't get past it. Just as I was writing this message, before, she started coughing up liquid. She must have got some water in her lungs. She died in my hands, just moments after I wrote the beginning part of this post.
