Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

It's hard to believe that she is gone...It was nice of them to cremate her for you, I hope your not paying for it though....

Today wasnt as good as the other days....Kat wasnt there, and everything with Sierra. But I did get to watch/restrain a dog for an ultrasound. A dog we put under anesthesia for a dental ended up getting a 2nd degree heart block and almost died on the table but they saved him. I helped them put the ECG leads on during that emergency.

The blocked cat from yesterday got his catheter removed today and went home. Hopefully he will be ok and wont reblock like many do.

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

Yeah, they are taking care of Sierra for free. I even told Tony my parents were there to pay, but he told us no several times.

Speaking of ECG leads...I think Steven mixed up the green and red yesterday morning. I think they were wondering why the ECG wasn't working right. I almost fixed it, but decided not to. I should have. But I was feeling prett crappy yesterday, even before Sierra's accident, so...

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

I have had to put the leads on about 3 times now I have to say THANK YOU very much Kat. Your "White is right" saying helps me every single time! That was my only problem before. I had the snow over grass and smoke over fire but which side messed me up every time.

Sounds like the internship is going great! Nothing better then doing the job you obviously love, looking forward to hearing more about it as you go.

Katz, I am so sorry about Sierra.

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

I got Sierra's ashes today, which I am thankful of. I was still in the slightly-still-in-denial stage, but having her little urn and ashes has definately cemented the fact, which is both a good and bad thing for me.

Today was interesting! SLK had the day off, so it was just me today. We had a very large , hairy dog that came in for vaccines, and had a reaction; vomited all over the floor, so we got him onto fluids and gave him some Dex SP, watched him carefully (that was my job), for like...2 hours. Then we sent him home, leaving the catheter in, in case of an emergency, but another hour or two later, we got word that he had "chewed it off", and he was rushed back in. Turns out that he'd just taken the cap off the catheter, which was preventing the flow of blood, so that was why the owners were so worried and upset. He got cleaned up and went home again, just fine.

We also had another dog come in, an Italian Greyhound named "Blue" (yes, he was blue), who had come from PetSmart's PetHotel, who had had 2 seizures in the last 24 hours (supposedly an epileptic, on phenobarb), and had sores all over his body, supposedly from chewing on himself. I'm not sure what they wanted us to do with/for him. His owners, who were out of state, called the dog's "grandmother", who took him home and, hopefully, to his own vet.

Other than those two cases, everything was pretty quiet. We had routine vaccinations, a couple of limping cases, some re-bandage cases (SLK, Jack came in today =p), ect. Nice and easy. I guess tomorrow is supposed to be pretty busy. =X

Wow, I dont like having a day off. I want to be there everyday! Just reading what you did today, even though it wasnt that much, I wish I was there! Did that kitty come in again to be re splinted/bandaged?

It's going to be hard having to leave this clinic after graduation if things keep going like this

We will all be there tomorrow though, that is the best. I cant wait to go tomorrow!

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

Nope, that little cat didn't come in again, thank goodness. We did have another cat come in, though, who had been shaved over at the Grooming station, who got cut (by the groomers). I couldn't understand it; this cat was already pretty short-haired, why were they (the owners) having him groomed? Poor guy. I think they just put some staples in him and cleaned him up, then sent him back to grooming to be finished and sent home. No big deal, really. And that cat was cute; he would talk to anyone. =3

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

Today was interesting. I made a thread about one of the interesting events of the evening. But besides that, I got to do a lot of blood work with the machines. I managed to stick a jugular vein on the first try Im so happy about that.

Yesterday I got to do a cystocentesis (stick a needle into the dog/cats bladder through the abdomen). That was fun, the dog didnt even flinch when the needle went through.

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

So many of the dogs I see at the clinic, I want to take home! But none as much as the dog I saw the other day. A black Great Dane named Centaur. He was such a sweetie! I love Great Danes and I cant wait to bring one home someday!

This one vet at the clinic, I dont really like her, she gets mad at the animals if they make too much noise or move to much. I seriously think she should be working with humans and not animals because you almost never see a dog or cat that will just sit still and quiet for you to poke it with needles. The other day she got so made at this Schnauzer for screeching every time she tried to get a needle in (an already painful!) a bite wound it had. After the dog did that twice (only 2 tries?) she decided not to give it the pain reliever and just staple the bite wound without any drugs. Which I could see other doctors doing it like that but for the safety of the animal and not because they have an attitude.

SLK, Vets like her are the reason many dogs fear the vet. She may have undone months of the owners tryimg to make the vet a 'good' place for the dog.

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

Both of our female doctors are like that, sadly. =/ Unfortunately, just like everyhting else, there are good vets and bad vets, and as interns, we can't really do a damn thing about how they treat their patients.

Sometimes I agree with their roughness, like with a bulldog we had yesterday, who, even with two of us techs, and the vet, trying to hold it still for the ophthalmic and ear exams, was all over the place, so the lady vet grabbed it roughly and slammed (I don't want to use that word, but it describes what she did best) onto the ground so we could jump on it. I don't think that particular dog was upset, though. =P She was exactly the same once we let her up. Silly, crazy, UNTRAINED dog. >_<

But yeah, most of the time, they are just kind of...spiteful towards the animals, when they are "misbehaving". It's obvious they are not animal behaviour consultants.

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

It's going...pretty well. =) We've had some issues with one of the doctors, who doesn't generally like us to do anything, because she doesn't like to use new people.

Oh, and yesterday, there was a big fight between one of the techs and one of the vets. I had today off, so I don't know if anything else has happened, whether or not the tech quit or was fired, or not.

But all in all, I know -I'm- pretty satisfied with how things are going, and I think SLK is, too, but I'm sure she'll come on sooner or later and tell you herself. =P

Sounds like fun! I've worked for a vet for a little over a year now. Are both of you certified techs or are they just letting you do tech stuff?

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

We are in the process of being certified. We have already taken the test, now all we have to do is graduate and we will be certified vet techs.

Internship is going well. Out of the 4 vets I originally liked 2 of them, and 1 wasnt nice to use, and the 4th vet I kind of liked, she was nice but could be mean (but not to me!). Now I like 3 of them and that one that was mean is coming around. My "boss" told us that thats just the way she is with new people, it takes her awhile to come around, which she now is being more nice.

I did a lot of blood work today, which I love to do. But I really REALLY dont like doing fecals, I take too long to do them because I have to look at every speck I see to make sure it is not a parasite egg. I somewhat enjoy doing urine analysis's, but I hate being the one to find out that the animal is in renal failure Which we have found a few already.

It's amazing, I have learned that there are so many people who do not train their dogs. Most of them pull like crazy on the leash. A few come in with prong collars, which I have learned to hate. I wish the owners would remove the prong collars before letting us take their dogs in for a few hours. The prong collars get in the way, especially when we are restraining them. Today one pinched my fingers, I cant imagine what it felt like to the dog who was laying on the ground pushing the prongs into his neck.

I dont know how our supervisor is going to evaluate us correctly when he cant keep the 2 of us straight. Oh well, we still have lots of fun

Oh ok, for some reason I had the impression that this was your first time to work in a vet setting. I was wondering why they let you draw blood the first day! haha. I'm glad you're having a lot of fun, I LOVE working for a vet. Sometimes you have to deal with the sad stuff, but there's other times, like watching babies being born that really makes is worth everything that you have to do.

Re: Im off to my first day of internship!!

We have had 2 dogs come in on separate days that had bleeding problems. One possibly got into rat poison, we did a coagulation study on them and I think the results werent really good but the worst part is we havent heard from the owner. He wont call us back so we dont know if the dog is okay or not. The other dog is this little catte dog mix named Cinder, her gums were constantly bleeding and she started to limp on one of her legs so the owner gave her an aspirin....Which makes things worse. But we gave that dog steroids and with the coag study we did on that dog it looks like steroids will help her. But the Dr's still think these dogs will dye soon. It has been sad lately. I dont really like working that much anymore. It's amazing how many owners there are that either refuse to pay money to fix their animals or just dont have the money to do it. And there are a lot of dogs that need to be muzzled or they will bite us. I enjoy doing the bloodwork though and taking the dogs out to go potty outside. I am starting to look at the options I have after graduation, it's surprising how much stuff I could do. I might work for a groomer on my island. I could work in physical therapy (I want to try this!). I might work for the humane society, on my island not many animals are put to sleep because there is enough space for them in the shelters.

Which Island are you from? We may get stationed on Oahu, I'm fighting it though as there are breed restrictions in housing (which we would be required to take or lose our DLA) and I'd be forced to rehome Angel
