I sure do have one HUGE task to do...

As some of you may know the bathroom upstair's tub has been leaking for a long time and just got fixed a couple of months ago. Well ever since it started leaking there was a thin but large crack running down one corner of my bedroom wall as this wall is next to our bathroom and is below the upstair's bathroom. I just looked at it today and saw this,

As you can see its pretty bad. Now we will be telling the landlord and they will most likley have to tear down the wall and fix the leak and replace the wall. I'm not sure. But before they come I have to move all of my tanks to my friends house as we aren't supposed to have fish tanks, shhh don't say anything. lol But I've got some huge tanks! I've got a 55g, 20g, 10g, and two 2.5g tanks. I also have to take my shelf down that has my stereo on it. My gosh, what a task! ha ha.

Wish me luck!

Yeah I know how much work moving fishtanks are. My roomate and i had to move a 55g, 20g, 10g and 2g last year when we moved. Now we moved the 55g into a 75g and still have a 5g and a 20g. I definitley dont envy you. Good luck!

Re: I sure do have one HUGE task to do...

Now the AC is out!!! Its 77f and stuffy outside, it just rained for a bit but that just made it worse! The 55 gallon tank is going to be the worse, I had to get someone to help me carry it in empty so I know I won't be able to keep any water in it. I have to have at least 75% of the water so that the fish won't stress out more than they already would having to be out of the tank and go to a new house.Lets see, a gallon of water weighs around 8 pounds, so 8 times 55 is around 440 pounds plus there is around 20 pounds of gravel in it to.. Anyone think they can lift that? Here is a pic of the 55 gallon and the shelf and stereo I will most likley have to take down,

hahah, we just threw blankets over our tanks and turned off the pumps when our landlord would come by, moving them wasn't an option, not to mention the closet full of snakes had no where to go either.

I don't envy you one bit man. I've moved 8 times since i've had fish.... four times with the giant fish.

Have fun with that.

Well I don't think our landlord is that stupid and would wonder what the huge thing under the blanket is.

naw man, you pile stuff in front and on top, like its a big pile of a bunch of things , like when you move there are piles of boxes.

Tell him its the stuff you moved away from the wall.

But still I'd have to move the tank as there is not that much space between the corner of the wall and the tank.

Oh I will. Got any ideas how to move large volumes of water to a new house? Cause like I said I'll need at least 75% of it so they won't go into stress.

Re: I sure do have one HUGE task to do...

Last time I moved my fish tank (back in AZ to a new home cuz I couldn't drive them to NY ) we ended up draining as much as we could and set it in the back of my hubby's truck and I drove it very gently for about 8 miles to move them.
Granted, not quite as big of a tank (35 gallon) but it worked.
Also, putting the big fish in a large gatorade container works (drain the tank water into one of those tall orange coolers) and putting the fish in there...it has a lid and it's pretty secure.

Won't your landlord notice a tank that large being moved out though?

No he won't notice it if he isn't around, this landlord never shows up unless someone has a repair to be made.

pamperedpups, care to explain?

Do you have had water test kit? If so, test your pH and your friend's pH...if they aren't significantly different you won't need to transfer much water -- just enough to keep the substrate and filter media damp. Even if they are different, unless you plan to haul water from your place every so many days for a water change, they are going to have to acclimate to his at some point. You want to empty the tanks anyway though, especially the 55 gal, as having water/lots of substrate in it when you move it will put a ton of stress it's not designed to handle on the seams, and could create a weak spot that will cause issues later.

Best bet is to dump the gravel into new/fish-only buckets or rubbermade containers with enough water to keep it damp so the bacteria doesn't die out. Keep all your filter floss/sponges (I don't know what kind of filters you have) in tank water as well to prevent a crash when you set it up.

You can transfer the fish in those big gallon ziplocs, rubbermade containers that have never had soap used in them, or get bags from your nearest fish store. Putting all the bags in a cooler will help keep the temp steady...you may need to run bubbles in them depending on how long they are out of water, but probably not. Be sure to split them up as much as possible to avoid fish on fish aggression in the bags.

When the tanks are up, put treated tap water from your friend's house in, stabilize the temperature, and then float the bags and acclimate the fish just like when you bring them home from the store.

I moved my 10 gallon 4 times without losing a single fish, and have been researching how to move my tanks all the way to Illinois for about 4 months (the planted tank is going to be a royal PITA, lol)...hopefully this helps.

Yep, that helps. I already knew to keep everything wet, its just the moving part thats going to be a pain and to move it back in a couple of days, depending on how long it takes them to fix the wall.

You're not supposed to be keeping the fish at your place, so...
