| For all you Eragon and Eldest fans (The Inheritance Trilogy) The third book is coming out! Look here: http://www.alagaesia.com/index.php
Oops, sorry, I just read that it is not known as the Inheritance Trilogy anymore. It is now called the Inheritance cycle because Christopher has decided to write 4 books instead of just 3.

I read the first one at a dog show because I was bored.... and while it kept me amused I also realized he had basically stolen bits and pieces of several other stories..... why he wasn't charged with plagiarism I have no idea.....
the second book was even more blatantly copied from others.....
and I hated the second one....
I wont bother with the third.....

I'll see what I think after I read them. |

| Re: For all you Eragon and Eldest fans (The Inheritance Trilogy) Hmm, I didn't notice any 'stolen' ideas, though I did see stron Tolkien and McCaffrey influances. I know he's a very young writer, so maybe much of it was just inexperiance showing through. Personally, I enjoyed the books, though they're certainly not on the level of authors such as McCaffrey or others of the 'greats' I think the kid has potential. Lets just hopw he doesn't get his story threads too tangled like Robert Jordan did! |

| That's how I felt too. I really enjoyed the books, and I'm looking forward to the new one! |

| Re: For all you Eragon and Eldest fans (The Inheritance Trilogy) I agree with Cshellenberger. While there are many strong influences from writers I don't think he stole anything. Also I really felt that he developed as a writer between the first and second books and I am eagerly anticipating the third. |

It's entertaining IF you can keep up. | The twelfth book is coming out sometime later this year or next. Unfortunately, Jordan died before it was released. He kept very detailed notes on the series though, and his wife (who was integral to every step of the process) is finishing it along with a professional writer. The 12th is, and was always planned to be, the last in the series.
And about Eragon... it's not even copying from Tolkein and McCaffrey, it's from Star Wars. If you depersonalize the names of people in the story, it's 100% EXACTLY like the storyline of Star Wars.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about (caution, spoilers): http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1866494 |

| Re: For all you Eragon and Eldest fans (The Inheritance Trilogy) I just found it unoriginal. It was an okay read.
Not copied. These are themes and common stories that are present in LOADS of works before these books. It's just the same fantasy story over and over again, imo.
I think copied is a strong word, however, it is very typical of the traditional fantasy format.
That's why fantasy is so hard to write... and why it's hard to read at times. It's the same rhetoric over and over again. |

| Re: For all you Eragon and Eldest fans (The Inheritance Trilogy) Yeah, you see a very similar plot line in a couple of the "Shannara" books and in Melanie Rawn books as well. Doesn't mean it's copied. |

| Re: For all you Eragon and Eldest fans (The Inheritance Trilogy) I thought the books were intertaining. I'll read the rest of the books in the series, but I won't be running to grab the next book either. I think of his books like the Harry Potter series....good, but I can think of a LOT better books that could have been made into movies. (*cough* Guilty Pleasures, by LKH! *cough*)
I'm not a huge fan of epic fantasy, but the Eragon books got me interested....and then I stumbled upon the Sword of Truth series....now THAT is some good reading. |

It just kinda keeps going...and going...as if he didn't want to end the series even though it was ready to end...
That said I did *really* like several of the books in the series. |

I didn't mind the preachy side, because I thought he was making very good points. I love the Wizard Rules - very good advice.
I have yet to ever be completely satisfied by a fantasy series. It always ends up being too much (or not enough) of something.
This is getting way off topic, but has anyone read that series by Jim Butcher? Once I read the last Sword of Truth book and after the next LKH book comes out, I won't have any series to read....Jim Butcher's series intrigued me. |
