I have no idea...it may well be an appendix although I think I mostly used information from the books...it was probably bits and pieces of things here and there that I pulled out and combined. I wish I had the paper with all the citations in it to give you, but I lost that like 3 hard drives ago.

do the elves use some sort of birth control?
was there some sort of spay program, or are they just a bit cold-blooded?
lol...I don't think Tolkien goes into that much detail. But I like to assume that elves are just sort of above those animal instincts of that sort. Perhaps they don't have reproductive organs at all.

Maybe it's environmental sterility?
I love the LoTR books and movies, but I have to say I never thought of it like that...that goes along with "what color does a smurf turn if you choke it"...

aragorn and arwen
beren and luthien
idril and tuor (idril was the daughter of the high king of gondolin. tuor was a mortal)

beren and luthien had progeny and their progeny wedded with the progeny of idril and tuor and that of that line was born elrond and elros giving rise to aragorn and arwen.

there is some mention of elvish children in the historical notations but the language is flowery and hard to decipher. especially some of the stuff written in the elvish tongues...you have to extrapolate because all this stuff was written as an exercise in philology...

Re: Lord of the Rings Thread

Gandalf, and the other Mages are actually Valar that took on Mortal bodies as was Melkor, to whom Sauron was sworn. It's discussed in the "Unfinished Tales" and the Silmarrilon.

Actiually Elves DO have children, however they don't reproduce as readily as Humans due to their immortality.

Actually they are Istari. Curunir (Saruman) Mithrander (Gandalf) and Radagast are mentioned by name, though there were 5 that traveled to Middle Earth, Their original names were Curumo(Saruman), Aiwendal (Radagast) Olorin (who was clad in Gray) Alatar and Pallando.

my two fav tolkien songs:

Tom Bombadil's Song
Frodo:
Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo!
By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow,
By fire, sun and moon, harken now and hear us!
Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!

Tom Bombadil:
Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow,
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow.
None has ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master:
His songs are the stronger songs, and his feet are faster.

Wake now my merry lads! Wake and hear me calling!
Warm now be heart and limb! The cold stone is fallen;
Dark door is standing wide; dead hand is broken.
Night under Night has flown, and the Gate is open!

Hey! now! Come hoy now! Whither do you wander?
Up, down, near or far, here, there or yonder?
Sharp-ears, Wise-nose, Swish-tail and Bumpkin,
White-socks my little lad, and old Fatty Lumpkin!

and the elven hymn to elbereth

Snow-white! Snow-white! O Lady clear!
O Queen beyond the Western Seas!
O light to us that wander here
Amid the world of woven trees!

Gilthoniel! O Elbereth!
Clear are thy eyes and bright thy breath,
Snow-white! Snow-white! We sing to thee
In a far land beyond the Sea.

O stars that in the Sunless Year
With shining hand by her were sown,
In windy fields now bright and clear
We see your silver blossom blown!

O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!
We still rember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas.

text? notations? which book? on the istari references? saying that istari are not maiar? I don't remember that...though it's been a long time since I read the books...
