You and me both

He really liked him up until he realized I was kinda serious, then he was like, "Oh, you are serious? Noooo." By kinda serious I mean I know it's a really bad idea atm.

Except on the way home, he just trots next to me when its charted territory. Anywho- If we are running, we can cut the time down right? I usually do a 20 minute run, and I mix in some walking too. Im not as in shape as I thought. What do you guys suggest for my boys? And should i feed then AFTER we run or before?

I can't comment on the walking or running part but I am going to voice my opinion on the feeding part...

The dogs shouldn't eat for at least 45 minutes before or after strenuous exercise. They need time to transition back to a normal heart/pulse/breathing rate before eating. And if after eating, they need that time to digest their food before any strenuous exercise.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

Are you sure i wasnt there... Alright fine... lol. jk anyways.

Yeah i didnt know if it was better for them to eat like an hour or so before running or an hour or so after.... an hour or so after makes it like 10:30 pm. heres another one.

Is it better to feed them at like 4pm and take them out to go potty before bed (midnight) Or to feed them at 9:30 pm when I get home and then they wont have to go potty till the morning. (I still take them out before bed)

EDIT- I noticed I'm taking this very ON topic. Sorry guys. I felt the need to talk about dogs for a minute! lol

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

I am very unaware of your living situation so forgive me if I am taking it for the granted, but I just let Ollie out whenever he wants, not on a schedule.

As for exercise, it is your choice what you want. Are your dogs still bouncing around the place within a few hours of getting home? Do you feel they are too demanding of attention? Then up the exercise. Are they collapsed and completely worn out, and you wish they were more active? Then do a bit less.

With Ollie, he runs 8+ miles a day. I do, however, slightly underwork him. The reason for it is because I like an active dog in my house. Makes things lively and fun. I work him out enough that this little bit of activity at home is enough to make him content for the day.

It is your choice as to what you want to do. Just work on it trail and error. Your dogs will need individual exercise programs because some dogs are more energetic than others, regardless of breed or size.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

Well -- what time do you feed them in the morning? If they get a later morning meal, then I'd pick the later evening meal, and vice versus. It probably doesn't matter though, as long as you are consistent.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

Cherokee eats at 7AM and again at 4PM. He asks to go out within 5 minutes of eating. I only let him out when he asks. He has never had house training issues so I let him call the shots there. He often doesn't go out after his after dinner pooh/pee. I swear he has the hugest bladder. We used to make him go out before bed and he would sit on the desk and stare at the door like "hey, why'd you kick me out?"

Ollie's the same. I was stunned when he once went about 16 hours without a bathroom break. I was convinced he had gone inside....

If you feed them at 9:30 when is their run?

Honestly, whatever works best for your schedule is the way to go. Taking into consideration their feeding in relation to their run time that's what's important.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

Yeah its just hard. i want them to get enough exercise. (R- we recently moved into an apartment- no more backyard for them to get their zoomies out.)

I feed them once a day. Usually SO feeds them at like 4 or 5 pm. And then I take them out before bed and when we wake up they go RIGHT when we get outside.

I wonder if i should feed them after our run- maybe like 10 or 10:30 pm or so.. Idk Im not sure. In the house it was so easy, i could feed them whenever and didnt have to worry about accidents. I had a doggy door, and they loved it. Now its like- ok they need to eat at this time and potty at this time and its too hard...

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

I was having a good day. I didn't feel too bad on my walk with Cherokee today though I did need 12 tissues. Then I went to my jazz dance class. Then I had a massage. It was a very good day.
Then....I went to my allergist for my monthly shots and I had an allergic reaction. Now, I'm all drugged up on Benadryl and my arms are burning hot and swollen. I swear, I want to blow up every last dust mite on the planet. My body just won't fight them off.

Yay! At least you know he's really really real

I had a pretty good day too, outside of being trapped in our apartment due to it being a snow emergency, and illegal for me to be on the road outside of an emergency.

"But officer, I NEED some chocolate! This IS an emergency!"

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

Allergies, eh? It's about that time for me too.

I'll turn into a sneezing, sniffling, wheezing mess fairly soon!

I've been reading "The Other End of the Leash" and it's been so interesting so far. I'm very happy I decided to pick it up.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

Thanks Chrissy,
I'll be fine in the morning though my arm will probably still bug me. This has happened 2 times before and this is the smallest reaction of the 3. I don't react to the pollen or cat shots at all anymore. It's the stinkin dust mites.

R- The shots really work. I don't even use my allergy medicine anymore and I am off my asthma meds too. The shots are a long and annoying process but, in all, they have been worth it. Especially since I garden for a job.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

I'm so lucky, I have very faint allergies to a couple things, but nothing I encounter everyday. Wheat, chocolate, lamb and peanuts. I still eat all of them.

Once in a while I get a rash, but I refuse to stop eating lamb and chocolate.

MMM, at least it's getting better, you're going in the right direction.

Re: Ever have one of those days.....

I'm allergic to everything but mold and dogs. I always thought I was allergic to dogs because my dad's labs gave me hives. I now know that they would lick me then I would get pollen from them on my licked arms. It was like having a mini scratch test. I was allergic to the stuff they dragged in.

Oh, I used to always greet dogs with my hands behind my back because I thought I was allergic. Dogs always loved me even though I tried to ignore them. Now that I have a timid dog I learned that lots of dogs really prefer to be greeted that way. I was having good doggy greeting manners by accident

I'm allergic to chocolate too, along with red food dye -- both give me migraines if I am stupid and eat too much. I pretty much avoid red food dye altogether (more severe reaction), and only eat chocolate sparingly.

Oh, and caterpillars. Yeah, seriously. Haven't touched one since I was 6, when I got booted from kindergarten because the teachers wouldn't believe I had hives from playing with a caterpillar, not Chicken Pox.
