pugs

My grandson has been asking for a pug since he was 3 years old. I've taken him to the shelter to pick out a dog but he wants nothing but a pug. He is now responsible enough to take care of one but we cannot afford to buy one from a breeder. Is there anyone out there who has or knows of someone who is looking for a good home for a pug? My grandson is very responsible and has read all about them to prepare himself and I would love to be able to make his dream come true. Thank you Jessie

You should still talk to a breeder of good quality, registered pugs. You just never know, they may have a young adult or an older puppy, or a puppy they are willing to co-own, you would be surprised at how often good breeders can and do make such arrangements.

I urge you to look only for a good quality, registered dog from a reputable breeder. Your grandson will have a broken heart if you buy from a BYB or PetStore, and then has health or temperament issues because of trying to save some money in the purchase price. Not only that but supporting the insincere breeders is something we just don't want to do.

If you're in the states, check out your American Kennel Club. In Canada, its the Canadian Kennel Club. Only those two clubs should be your source. Don't say, " papers don't matter, its just for a pet." They do matter because they indicate better breeding and study and effort and money has gone into producing a better dog. Good luck. Pugs rock !

Talking You Grandson has great taste!

Or maybe a pro handler would know the best places. You can always look good Pug Breeding kennels on the internet. Some would be happy to settle at an affordable price for a well breed and well behaved dog for your grandson. It's awsome that he wants to try something so enjoyable!

Id use this to teach your grandson that a dog is alot more responsibility than he thinks. How old is he now??

I have 3 y/o daughter and she *thinks* she wants a lab of her own. Im glad she taking after her momma (me ) but there is alot of work involved in owning a Lab and I know she is not ready to accept the responsibility of having her own.

I think maybe when she is 8/9 years old I will start asking her to feed my Lab everyday. If she can feed/water/train the lab on her own without being asked then that speaks volumes that she is ready for one of her own, but she'll have to use her own initiative.

Now back to pugs. I think maybe what you can do is have the pug live with you BUT he can come see the pug and play with him when he's there visiting. This way you have the best of both worlds. The grandson is happy because now he has a pug at Grandma's house, and when he's there he can take care of the pug for the day he is there including feeding, watering, walking, bathing ,etc. This ensures he gets the hands on learning without the burden of full responsibility for the animal - which may be a relief for his parents.

Good luck on your decision - and I agree as a Lab owner that pedigrees are important - they up your chances of having a sound dog.
