Exclamation She couldnt get spayed!!

I took my cat to the Meow Mobile (operated by DDFL, the Humane Society) at my school today. It cost $10 for needed vaccines (Rabies or the regular combo) a spay and they even said they would try the extractions (Tanzie has retained baby canine teeth), if the teeth were lose enough. I dropped Tanzie off and when I went to pick her up they said they couldnt spay her. They had given her 3 doses of drugs to get her knocked out and she still wouldnt pass out! They said they have never had a kitten not pass out! So they said come back later and they will try some other techniques. Came back later and they said she still wouldnt pass out! They gave her gas and she was still awake!! They gave her vaccines but couldnt spay or do extractions. I want her spayed ASAP, but now I will wait 1 week before I try again (I don't want her to get more drugs in her system too soon). She never went to sleep, she was a little weird, not all there but still awake. They told me it has never happened to them before, I asked my teacher who was a vet for over 20 years and he said he never had an animal not go under before...strange.

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

Wow, that's terrible! Not only can you not spay her, what if in the future she needs surgery to save her life? I can only imagion how traumatizing it would be to have to be awake for that, so you'd most likely have to end up putting her down

I really hope you can figure out a way to get her to go to sleep! Have they tried tranquilizers and such? And I agree, I'd definately wait before putting more drugs in her system, though. You don't want perminant damage!

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

That is SO weird! I have never heard of that either. I don't suppose you know what drugs they used?

We had a dog in for a dental today and she was hard to get down, but she did go down eventually. The doc uses a combination of ketamine and diazepam (valium) and then we put them under with oxygen and isoflurane. We also give them a preanesthetic of torbugesic and acepromazine which helps to zonk them out a bit first. This dog got all of the above to it's weight and still had to be on a high amount of Iso to go down. It took a bit, but she slowly drifted to sleep.

I really wonder why she couldn't go down. That is truly bizzarre!

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

It is weird. But my vet teacher said he thinks it was the combo of drugs they used, the injectables and then the gas that probably did it. The shelter people thought it was her matabolism or maybe those drugs don't work on her (which is why I asked her to write them down for me). They were: Domitor, Ketamine, and Torbugesic injectable. Then they used the gas. My teacher thinks Tanzie would do fine in a normal clinic where they use more what you are using CrzyBrit.

Huh, I've never heard of them mixing Domitor in with the others, weird. It'd be interesting to see if they could put her into a cat box and iso her out. I know it takes longer, but I would think they would prefer to do that more than mix more drugs into her system. Hope they get it right the next time.

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

That is so bizarre. I have never even heard of Domitar...however it we may call it something different at our clinic?

Ours are pretty strong, but we try to keep them as light under anesthesia as possible because it's safer. We give torbugesic with ace as a preanesthetic because it helps them become drowsy and also torb helps them with the pain.

Are you going to go the the same place and try again or a clinic?

Good luck! Let us know!

I'm going to take her to a low cost clinic that they suggested to me. They use those drugs and I'm not sure (I don't think so) if they even hook the patient up to an anesthesia machine (sorry if it has a name, I havent got to that class yet, so I don't know). My teacher said Tanzie should do fine in a regular clinic instead of a mobile that uses different drugs because of the limited space and supplies.

Good news, might not have to pay for extractions, one deciduous canine fell out yesterday. And I'm pretty sure the other one is on its way to, it probably will be out by next week, when I plan on making an appointment for the spay.

Domitor is an IV drug that has a reversal agent to be given when you are through with whatever you need done. It comes in very handy for those dogs who have painful ear infections that need a deep cleaning, you can clean all you want and then wake them when you are through and send them on home. If you don't give the reversal I believe it lasts for around 2-3 hours, can't remember.

That is awesome! I so wish we had that at our clinic. I'll have to ask Dr M about it...

Yeah, so they just give that and don't use anesthesia in that mobile unit. Thats weird...They can be under those drugs for a spay but no anesthesia...

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

DKT is a very common combo that can be given IM. Cats will respond differently to any drug. There is usually what we call a bell curve. A few respond very strongly, most respond normally, and a few respond lightly. Domitor is a very useful drug because it has analgesic and sedative properties and is reversible. It can be given IV or IM. It is not a miracle drug, though, and is inappropriate in many situations. Like every drug used in anesthesia is has its good points and its bad ones.

We actually do all of our feline neuters with no anesthesia. One of the doctors uses an IV injection of ketamine and valium which puts them out completely and enough to be asleep for the like 4-5 minute procedure. For very aggressive cats he uses an IM dose of Telazol which is even more powerful.

The other doctor uses an IV injection of ketamine, acepromazine and atropine which isn't as strong as the ket/val but works for such a short procedure.

For feline spays one doctor doesn't use anesthesia either. Well she gives and IM injection the same as if it were a neuter, but the cats are often not asleep enough for the spay and have to be 'masked down' so they get oxygen and isoflurane through a mask throughout. It depends on the cat though...some stay asleep the whole time w/o anesthesia.

Anyway, did she get spayed yet?

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

No my sister, Tanzies real owner , doesnt seem to care and doesnt even want to get any vaccines for the cat (not even rabies which is required by law). So I pretty much do everything and tell my sister how much it costs and she pays for it (so I need to find the cheapest stuff).

I'm making the appointment for the spay on Monday (since they're probably closed on Sundays). I'm hoping to get her spayed this coming week, since the week after that is Thanksgiving and then after that is cutting it close (I'm going home for Christmas and the cats are staying with a friend who owns 7 cats), I want her to be fully recovered before I leave.

Re: She couldnt get spayed!!

The use of IV or IM drugs is considered anesthesia as long as the animal is unable to respond to painful stimuli. You can say that they didn't receive gas anesthesia but if they are unconcious and unable to respond then they are anesthetized.
