| Whoo hoo a pig Kill!! What can I ask for? Ok, DH's best friends father has a pig farm. Every fall they have the annual pig kill.
DH asked me what to bring home for Kina and Sadie to chew on and a wicked treat?
He suggested their tails and ears. Now I've never given them raw ears before. Are they as fattening as the ones you find at the pet store?
If I’m going to give them the tails to chew on, should I skin them first, or just give them the tails.
I was told to stay away from any weight barring bones, so I guess femur bones would be out of the question. Or can I give them femur bones?
Any other suggestions on what bones I can ask for? |

| Re: Whoo hoo a pig Kill!! What can I ask for? Ok gross but here it goes.. heart, liver are really good protein... lung, brain (yuk) can be also... tails and ears are good too just high bake them at like 450 for a half hour to dehydrate them or put them in a food dehydrator and sprinkle with flavor if you want at jerkey setting. They would be just as fattening as they mass produced ones. Hocks are good and I never heard that abut weight bearing bones in pigs thing but the general rule is that femur bones are ok as long as they're at least a half inch thick sidewall for assertive chewers and the natural raw are better than pocessed and cooked... they splinter. I would inagine that any organ that doesn't directly deal with the removal of waste from the body like the intestines would be good made into a hummus and frozen for puppy. Anything you get like ears, tail, trachea, snout you're gonna want to dehydrate or somehow cook I would think. |

I would have never thought of asking for the snouts or even the trachea!! I guess nothing goes to waste!
I would think of cooking the bones! I use to give Sadie cook bones before knowing better and she jumped up on my lap and just dropped a piece of femur bone about the side of you index finger and pointed like a tooth pick. A very big tooth pick!!
Scared me half to death!! What if she would have swallowed it. She's never been given any cooked bones since!
It baffles me as to why they still sell them in pet stores!

Something about greenies that never tempted me to buy them. I don't know why. After learning about them, I'm glad I never bought them.
Sorry to hear that they nearly killed your great dane! What happened? |

| Re: Whoo hoo a pig Kill!! What can I ask for? He swallowed a 2 1/2 inch piece whole and almost obstructed. he puked it back 2 days later (thank god). They're so tightly compressed they don't break up when swallowed in large chunks. Busy bones (look like compressed sand) are MUCh better. Those do dissolve when they hit the stomach.

| Re: Whoo hoo a pig Kill!! What can I ask for? I think if its just a treat and not something they get all the time, I wouldn't worry too much about the fat content. Consider it a junk food day. As far as what you can give them, I think most of the animal is fine to eat. My husband just got a buck today and we gutted it in the yard. They ate parts that would make men blush....They wont touch the intestines and I figure what they WANT to eat must be appealing and ok to.
How exciting to have the opportunity for fresh pig! |
