It's not a protein thing at all but a Calcium/phosphorus combination as you mentioned. You can't limit a dogs growth with less protein, you are only starving it from the nutrients it requires.

I've found that EVO actually ends up costing less over time than some lower priced foods. If you read the label you'll see that it has a LOT of calories/cup. I ended up giving our dogs almost half as much per feeding of the EVO than the previous food.

I was feeding a cup of Evo twice a day, noticed some weight gain so I cut it back to 3/4 cup twice a day. No weight loss so now they get 2/3 cup twice a day and their weight has stabilized.
