Does anyone give acidophilus?

We took our dog to the vet yesterday and she has been given some antibiotics to take 2x a day for 7 days. Does anyone give their dog acidophilus? If so how much and do you add capsuls to the food or just give plain yogourt? I dont want to upset her system and kill off all the good bacteria (I am not a fan of antibiotics but apparently she has an infection in her foot)

Re: Does anyone give acidophilus?

I do, plus salmon oil and 1 other supplement I can't remember right now, lol. Kuma has trouble with Demodex from time to time, and these boost his imune system which prevents it. I just put the capsul in his food and mix it up, but he eats raw, so it's pretty easy to do. I'd try adding it to the food first, and if she doesn't eat it, then try mixing into yogurt.

Re: Does anyone give acidophilus?

My vet doesn't suggest giving probiotics when the dog is on antibiotics. It interfers with the medication. But you can definitly use it as soon as the dog gets off the meds. If her poop starts to get soft while on the antibiotics try a spoonful of canned pumpkin added to her meal.

When I had Sadie on antibiotics, the vet also gave me some Purina Forti Flora.

I've also used Sensible Solutions by Eagle pack.

Re: Does anyone give acidophilus?

The supplement my dogs get daily ( canine complete by Wholistic Pet) has probiotics in it already, so my dogs get them all the time to help keep their immune systems peak

Re: Does anyone give acidophilus?

Yoshi gets pro biotics, but you should def ask the vet about talking them while on anti biotics...Yoshi went thru an intestinal infection and we gave the pros after the meds, it helped a ton!

Re: Does anyone give acidophilus?

Thanks for the replies. I have decided to give her some just to keep all the good bacteria going She is on a strictly raw diet so I didnt want to upset her natural balance with the antibiotics.

I have been putting one capsul in with her morn food...does that sound like an ok amount? she is a 12.5 Jack Russell.

Opps meant to say 12.5 lb Jack Russell LOL
