| What Kinds of Fish? I feed raw, and usally give fish once a week. So far I have just been giving canned fish in water with no salt (when possible). But I would like to see if some of the fish I can order through the restaurant supplier is okay...
They have:
Skinless Perch fillet ($1.49/lb)
Pollock fillet ($1.49/lb)
Pollock Fillets TONG??? (1.69/lb)
Pollock fillet Alaskan (1.59/lb)
POLL BRD RAW TRI??...which I guess is another Pollock, not sure what all the rest is about (1.19/lb)...I wonder if BRD means its breaded....
WHTG DRSD-HDLSS ($1.49/lb)...something thats headless?
Tilapia, gutless and skinless (1.39/lb)
I appreciate any help. I plan on giving more fish during the winter, so I'm just trying to get my feelers out. |

Whichever you want is fine (prefer as whole as possible but that's me), but have you tried your dog on raw fish before? Some dogs just won't eat it...I'd hate to have you order a bunch only to have that problem.
Case in point my Web will eat both canned and raw fish, but Kim will only eat canned. I followed the whole "wait them out" deal for four days, and on the fifth day she turned up her nose even though she hadn't had anything but water and I caved...canned fish only for her. |

| Re: What Kinds of Fish? hehehehe, maybe I should have thought that title through a bit, whoops.
I have no doubt in my mind that Lupa will eat it, my husky, however, would be the picky one. I've given them tilapia fillets before and they enjoyed them.
I have to admit, i'm a little worried about the bones in a full fish. Are they soft like chicken bones? Okay unless cooked, type thing? |

| Re: What Kinds of Fish? Pollock and perch both have more Omega 3 than the tilapia. Perch has more iron and zinc than the others.
Max gets whole mackerel and sardines. The bone is fine but these are 5 ounces and under. He loves the heads.
I buy fish for the Omega 3. These are low calorie meats but low in any minerals as well. Might be a good thing to buy to bump up protein for Max - add to his usual which has the minerals, O3 and all that. IF he would eat it. He eats the fatty fishes but last unless there is chicken as well. Chicken is always last and I suspect perch is very boring meat just like chicken. But easy meat. Now I am going to look for the stuff, probably be more than $1.39 a pound in small amounts.
I would try it out before getting a case unless you are willing to eat it yourself. |

| Re: What Kinds of Fish? Thanks for all that info!! I am also buying it for the O3, so that was a very helpful post. Where can you buy whole mackeral or sardines? I can only find the canned stuff. |

Hi N_I_L
I saw you are from the Chicago-land area...I used to live there myself (about 15 years ago, but who's counting!)
Check out Dirk's Seafood http://www.dirksfish.com/products.htm
I called him for you, and he said that while they don't have any sardines in right this minute, he can usually get them for you with 48 hrs. notice. He also said that he carries a fish that is like a small mackeral, called the "saurey pike" - only $6 for a pound.
Let us know how it works out! |

Thanks! Its quite a bit further north than I (I'm in Joliet, lol). I'll have to talk it over with my husband...unless we bought a whole lot in bulk, it might not be worth the trip up to the city. (that, and I am terrified of driving in the city, lol) |

(that, and I am terrified of driving in the city, lol) | I know what you mean about driving into the city... all I remember when I moved there was that the highways were wider than any I had ever seen, or driven, LOL. I am sure they are even busier now.
How about Burhops Seafood in Glenview and Hinsdale. They say that they carry fresh and frozen mackeral, and other things, like smelts. http://burhopsseafood.com/product.html |

| Re: What Kinds of Fish? Yuck, fish is sure expensive! I buy the small fish at a wonderful Asian market that will clean and fry fish for you. See if you can find any ethnic markets in your area. I googled and found places I didn't know existed. |
