How long will can food last?

Hello all,

We just started feeding our dog's Blue Buffalo Kibble mixed with a tablespoon of their blue Buffalo canned food, we had never feed premium dog food before so we are still experimenting and trying figure out how much to feed each dog.

To be honest before we had our 3rd dog, we did not know anything about how bad some of the popular brands can be. So we decided to buy better dog food for our dog. After some research we came up with 3 choices. Blue Buffalo, Wellness, and Chicken Soup.

We decided to start with Blue Buffalo and so far everything looks good. Here is what we feed our dogs.

Carin Terrier Mix (Rico) 9LB 10 years old -- Feed twice a day 1/4 Cup
Pomorenian (Gizmo) 7-8LB 9 years old -- Feed Twice a day 1/4 Cup
Japanese Chin/Terrier Mix (Yang) 12-14LB 1 year old -- Feed twice a day 2/3 Cup

At the moment we are mixing in 50/50 Old dog food with the BB. So far no sings of upset stomach. Only the Pomo seems not to like the Dog food. So we are monitoring his weight if he drops weight then we will try our next choice which is Chicken Soup.

Here are a few Questions I have.

How long can a can of dog food last after it is open?
At the rate we use it i think a can could last us 7 days. We use a can lid we got at the pet store to keep it sealed. Is this ok?

We are on a budget (Insert Bad economy line here) So we are always looking for a good deal. I have heard that Chicken soup is a very good brand and very well priced. Cosco Has another good Kibble that we might look into, Do you Recommend the Cosco Brand? Would it be worth getting a cosco membership?

I know Raw diets are cheaper and much better for our dogs but we have kids and my wife is a bit worried about the dogs eating Raw food and interacting with the kids.

Thank you very much

You should only keep an open can in the fridge for 72 hours.

Prior to getting my pup who has food allergies, I was feeding my older dog Sadie Kirkland. It is a good food for the price. It's made my Diamond. She did really well on it.

As for the membership. I've got the executive membership and spend a lot at Costco. My membership basically pays for itself.

Hi Kina_A Thanks for you quick response and input. Thats why i was worried about the Can food. My wife wanted to make sure it would not affect the Dogs by keeping a open can for too long. We will Adjust and see what we can do so that we do not have a lot of wasted can food after the 72 Hours.

Im going to see if i can find a label of the Kirkland food. I would like to know what ingridients they use.

I've seen the ingredients in Kirkland and they are on par with Chicken Soup. Those are the two best foods for the price IMO. I always recommend them to people who are on a budget and looking for holistic food.

My dog is on chicken soup. He loves it. Im switching him to innova EVO though, becuase of the high meat content, because im switching him from chicken soup senior to active care. Chicken soup canned food is a very good choice! I wouuld also like to ask the other members. I have been reading on the net that you shouldnt store the canned food in the can after its opened. I also have pet can cover.

That's what the store told me too. She told me to get a tupperware container and put the dog food in it then in the fridge. She said it should keep for 5-7 days in the tupperware and only about 48 hours in the can itself.
