Yeah, I had heard about that. Unfortunately (not to sound coldhearted) almost any orginization, well "big business" that has anything to do with animals has been accused/convicted of animal cruelty. It's one of those things I'd like to eradicate the world of, like homicide and starvation (animals or people)

Petsmart:
http://www.peta.org/feat-petsmart.asp

And I remember quite some time ago the case on PetCo. I remember the slogan:

PetCo where the pets die.

So sad.

Oh and if anyone is interested and hasnt visited PETA there's quite a few abuse/neglect cases there if anyone is interested in them as well.

It would be nice if this could be made a sticky. Iams is not the only offender but I believe they are the worst.

If your looking to stay away from animal testing, don't by foods that are owned by major companies. There is a difference between animal researching and animal testing.

Animal Testing:
Iams and Eukanuba---Owned by Procter & Gamble (makes shampoo, etc)
Science Diet---- Owned by Colgate (makes toothpaste, etc)
Purina---Owned by Nestle (makes candy, etc)
9-Lives---Owned by Heinze (makes Kraft Dinner, etc.)
ETC., ETC., ETC.

Companies that are for animal researching:
California Natural, Innova, Healthwise---Owned by Natura (makes pet food)
Natural Balance---Owned By **** Van Patten---(makes pet and zoo formulas)
ETC., ETC., ETC.

These list can go on and on. My point is to read the lables. The more people that refuse to by products that support ANIMAL TESTING the less those products will be made.

You can go to this website and it gives you a list of companies that do/that don't test on animals.

Nutro is a privatley owned company. They have their own labs. And deal only with pet food.

I switched from Iams to Nutro Natural after seeing the animal testing video. I was SICK over it for days....

how can these companies do this kind of testing ? It's so cruel. I haven't seen that Nutro tests on animals but if I do find out they do - I'm switching again. There's lots of good foods out there - we don't have to buy from any company that test on live animals

Nutro is sketchy

According to PeTA Nutro is affiliated with animal testing, but they deny any such claims. Be that as it may I enjoy the results of Nutros food, especially the ultra, however if they are considered questionable I am considering changing foods to something I know is going to give me good results without having harmed animals in the process. Anyone have any suggestions ob switching, should I wait until they are proven guilty or should i base my choice of theyre questioning?

According to PETA you shouldn't even own a pet. Until proved otherwise Nutro is a privatly owned company who concentrates on pet food only and does it's own animal researching.

Personally I don't feed Nutro, but if your animals are doing well on it, do not change.

"According to PETA..." is like saying "According to President Bush, Iraq has weapons of mass descruction." Not exactly an unbiased source.

I'm sorry, but I do not trust PETA. I wouldn't feed IAMS in the first place, because it's a horrible food, but PETA is not a very reliable source. There are far better animal welfare groups out there, who get their point across without being violent, offensive, or extreme.

Well, there are two sides to every coin-

With out research, how would it be possible to know exactly how much protien, or crude fat a dog needs in its diet to be healthy?

I agree that Iams is a cheap and bad food (as is Purina, Pedigree, Eukenuba, Science Diet, Beneful, etc.)

However, very few dog food companies actually test their product. They use what big companies like Purina and Iams have found, and then base their formula loosley on that.

With that being said, I think that Iams has been unnecessarily cruel to the animals that it chose to use as testing subjects.

Like I said- two sides to every coin.

I am feeding my dogs Orijen. I just started it about a month ago. I really like it. I talked to my vet today and she feels it is the closest to accurate protein/carb ratio. No grains and it doesn't have three pages of ingredients. When I worked at the health pet food store, I noticed a lot of the foods had sooo many ingredients in them. To me, less is more. Also, when you are dealing with problems with your animal and wanting to minimize food stuffs again less is more. Of course, I like a lot of the foods out there I just have to be very careful with Rory. No grains at all! My vet told me this story of a Lab she had who had seizures. He has been clear of them for almost a year. He had been on no grains. By accident he ate ONE corn chip. He seized two hours later.
