Will this kill my dogs??

Hi,

New here. Due to finances and the current state of the economy and the fact that my husband got laid off. We are feeding our dogs Ol'Roy Complete Nutrition formula. I checked the ingrediants and although they don't seem the best, it doesn't seem all that bad..comparable to Purina Dog Chow.

Now before you start throwing sticks and stones at me...YES I love my dogs.. YES I provide them regular veterinary care. YES I need to put my family's needs before there's. and NO I am not going to give them up because I cannot afford a premium food at the moment.

Now that that's out of the way. My question is simply, will feeding this food harm my dogs. I know there are mixed reviews about this brand. But it's very cost affordable for us at this time in our lives. If everyone that hit a hard spell financially gave up there dogs...shelters would never be able to keep up.

Does or has anyone used this food with success? Thank you.

I don't think anyone will throw sticks at you. You can only so what you can. Some dogs can do good on Ol'Roy. Some dogs just can't tolerate it. Try and if it works, then good for you. If not, try something else. Every dog is different.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

A breeder of one of my field/show cross bitches used to feed Ol' Roy ... I think he had good luck with the Lamb & Rice moreso than the other versions. As far as I know, he had fat healthy pups and good coats. When I got my pup from him she was a fat little thing in very good condition

No it will not kill your dog, but you may want to add scraps or eggs just for a little extra nutrition.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

It probably won't kill your dogs. But Ol' Roy has been involved in a lot of recalls, and being Wal-Mart's private label...it's just not a good food. If thats all you can afford at the moment and it works for your dogs then great.

The better the food the less they need to eat the cheaper the food the more because they need more nutrition so either way you are looking at the same price range.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

Thank you so much for not flaming me by feeding this. I have been on other dog related forums and have been straight out told to shoot my dogs between the eyes and have them die a quick death!

Obviously the food is not the best quality. I do realize this, but it is all we can afford at the moment...if we want to feed ourselves and pay our bills.

In all honesty though...I expected the ingrediants to be much worse. At least the type I have...the lamb & rice one actually have lamb meal as the first ingreadiant (not corn) Unfortunately my little guy is sensative to lamb and gets runny poos...

sorry, this is not necessarily true....i feed Purina One, but the times that i have tried "better foods", and i have tried 3 of them, i have had to increase their intake by generally double....

but, on that note, as mentioned in above posts, give it a try and see how they do....we all do the best we can for all our kids, 2 or 4 legged....if you have a Sam's club near you, you might want to check out what they have....our WalMart, here, carries Member's Mark, a Sam's Club brand, and i have found it to be comparable to P.O. for less....

You're not a member of Costco, by chance? Kirkland (Costco's generic brand) is pretty decent as cheap dog foods go and it's definitely more affordable than many.

Niiiiice. I believe in giving pets the very best when at all possible, but sheesh, financial hard times happen and you do what you can.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

The ORIGINAL Ol' Roy isn't too horrible. About the same quality as Pedigree, IMO (I spent over an hour in the pet food section at Wal-Mart reading all the labels, LOL). Once you get into the "subcategories" of the Ol' Roy line, it gets pretty bad. The "Kibbles, Chunks, 'n' Chews" is horrible (and not cheap, either)! So as long as you stick to the Complete Nutrition formula, your dogs should be OK, especially if it's only for a short time. If you can, try to switch to Purina Dog Chow. It's a step up from Ol' Roy, and doesn't cost much more.

No dog food is outright poison... they wouldn't be legally allowed to sell it then. It's just low quality.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

I agree as long as you dog is doing fine on it it wont be a problem. Many years ago when my wife and I where reduced to living of top ramen type food for a few weeks you better believe our dog ended up with mainstay(cheap food). He did not touch his food for 2 days. We felt the same about ramen and mac n' cheese. Oh well I figure my dog will always eat a bit better then I do, and if you can afford it buy if you can't it wont kill em.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

Years ago, I did used to feed Ol'Roy, I competed and won in shows, bred a litter, and had great succes using the High Performance Formula of Ol'Roy. The High Pro seems to be their best formula.

Relax, you do what you have to do. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Re: Will this kill my dogs??

I bet your dogs are much happier sitting at home with you eating Ol' Roy than sitting in a pound somewhere eating whatever cheap kibble it feeds. When you can afford to feed better then do so. Until then Ol' Roy is ok.

Jihad
and the pound puppy crew.

I agree...feed what you can; and when you can find your feet again, then you can get them back on they were before. They certainly won't mind
