What age to switch from puppy to adult food

I have heard that with smaller breed puppies you switch them over sooner than larger breed puppies. In some cases I have heard people talk about switching them over before they were a year old. Is there a reason behind that. What age should you switch them over at. My pups are 7 1/2 and 9 months old. Bella weighs in at 12.5 lbs. Bug weighs in at 16 lbs. I just want to be prepared. Thanks.

Re: What age to switch from puppy to adult food

I know alot of people think there is no need for puppy food at all, but in my experience, I switched my girl to adult food at 7 months just so I wouldn't have to buy two bags, but she started loosing weight...from 20 lbs to 18 lbs...even though I was following the feeding guidelines, so now at 8 months she is back on puppy food. I'm guessing that even though the ingredients are very similar the puppy food is higher in calories. I personally am going to try a switch again at 1 year.

I'd say when the puppy reaches the adult size. Smaller breeds are different than the medium and large and don't take as long to reach the adult size.

What does your vet say?

Re: What age to switch from puppy to adult food

We are switching Mojo over now (6 months). I'm a little nervous about it because we are switching him to EVO and I know some pups can't handle it well. The company said is fine for small breed puppies and it actually has more calories than the CS he has been on. I'm just making a slow switch and keeping a close eye on how he does--if he's not handling it well I'll put him back on puppy food.

Re: What age to switch from puppy to adult food

I'm thinking of switching Zoey over around 9 months. Though I know she can stay on her food forever if we want. Nutrisource puppy food is the same as their Adult Super Performance food.

I wouldn't feel quite comfortable switching her over as soon as she reaches her adult size. She's 5 months old on the 26th, and she already weights 13.2 pounds. She's very close to being her fully grown weight of 15 lbs, and already has got the height and length of my father-in-laws lhasa apsos. (though his are getting a bit chubby around the middle in their old age. :-P ) Anyways I just feel that if I were to switch her at say, 6 months, it would be too early.

Re: What age to switch from puppy to adult food

Thanks to all of you. I think I am going to try a switch over after we are done with this bag of puppy food. If for some reason it doesnt work out, I will switch them back. I cant imagine that though. They are chow hounds with iron stomachs. lol
