| Horrifying experience Well- I had my very first horrifying experience. I never used to think about the actual chickens when I was divying up everyones food and whatnot. Tonight, I'm home alone, the dogs are all in the kitchen with me, (it was pouring so they ate inside tonight,) and I shocked them all with a VERY girly scream. Imagine my surprise when I reach into the bag of raw chicken and THIS is what I encounter.
This may or not be gross depending on your level of squeemish-ness....
Thats right folks, you're looking at a severed chicken foot. I reached in and saw that, practically waving at me. Toenails and all. It was still barely hanging onto one of the pieces. I SCREAMED. My dogs were SHOCKED.
SO was amused. He used it to wave hello to his brother.. boys
Oh heres a closer look, I saved it till SO came home: |

I won't eat 'em, but I've got at least 4 recipes for them. ;P That said, the dogs can have mine. Mal LOVES them.
Around here we call them Crunchies. (As in "Hey dogs, want crunchies?") and everyone comes running. :P They're thin enough that you don't have to thaw them before distributing, and they make good recreational chews if you have dogs who are hard to keep weight on. |

| Re: Horrifying experience I think most people do not think about where there food comes from or how there food is raised. Most of which is not very human conditions. I am a bit of a farmer and have raised much of my own food for the sake of the animals and my health. You might think that is strange. The thing is for me is I am going to eat meat. The chicken I raise have a much better life with me than a factory farm. They are raised with respect. I have tried go with out meat for my health and some times I can do it for awhile but not long. I started raising chickens becuase I didn't want eating factory farmed chickens. I also do not want chickens butched my machine. So I started raising my own and learned on line how to butcher them. I was not raised doing these things. To me everyone should know the whole process of where there food comes from from start to finish. I don't always raise my own food now. It is a lot of work and where I live it is not cheap to raise your own. Most of my animals are pets or ones we sell. Some of you have seen the picture of my husband with our chickens. He still is not a farmer. He loves the chickens and turkeys.

Love this photo.
Jenn, put the words "factory farm" into google or Youtube. You will never be the same.
Yes, the chickens do have large talons.
And big ol' ugly faces. hehe
Honestly tho, seeing that foot made me almost tear up. Its a sad reminder of how these guys (roosters are food, hens lay until they are dying, then become dog food) are killed and stuffed into bags with little supervision.

| Re: Horrifying experience Wow, I would have screamed too! I hate factory farms, thats why I support local and/or organic foods. In order to be USDA organic you have to treat the animals humanely and have regular unannounced inspections of the property. They cant be pumped full of hormones to grow unusually fast or be fed anything with antibiotics.
I would never eat chicken feet, you could feed them to your dogs though are you going to do that? |

People would be killing to get what little food was available.
People who hate factory farms have never walked through a grocery store with shelves empty because there is no food. There is no way on the face of the earth that small family owned farms can possibly feed everyone.
There are no hormones, steriods, or antibiotics in any chickens. |

| Re: Horrifying experience I would like to see something changed. I think it is gross to think of the conditions that the chickens are living in that are being eaten. I have raised broiler chickens. It is very sad that there only purpose is to die. Geneticly they can't live long. They are cripples and have bad hearts. Even with nearly starving them they grow to fast. Many organic farms still use broiler chickens. I would like to see more going back to the old fashion breeds. It all about profit and most of us are not willing to pay for it. Most of us don't even know what a chicken should taste like since many of you have never ate anything but a broiler chicken. U tube has some good video's. Some are not so good. I thought this one gave a honest show of what the broilers are about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpbtB...eature=related |

As for the chicken foot in the bag of chicken...I don't blame you Jenn...I would've screamed (or at least did a very loud "EWWWWWW!!!). I'm pretty much a sissy about somethings...this would be one of them. I would have made my boyfriend take it and get rid of it for me...although knowing him, he would have chased me around the house with it first...lol He can be a jerk. |

| Re: Horrifying experience Call me a sissy, but I'm very glad I don't feed Chicken FOOT Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.
I consider myself fairly unsqueamish. I've had lunch at work while a freshly removed pyometra-ed uterus was sitting in a stainless bowl next on the table next to me. But that's something I could not eat. |
