Fresh fish for the Dogs?

I have alot of lakes and rivers near by so would fresh caught lake, brook, or Rainbow Trout, or one of 5 types of northern Pacific Salmon be good for the dogs? Other local fish would be Arctic Char, Northern Pike, Grayling, and Burbot. There are more fish up here but those are what are in the nearest lakes and rivers too me.

Re: Fresh fish for the Dogs?

I have heard of a parasite being in salmon and trout. I think this is a article on it. http://www.doggienews.com/2007/11/sa...se-in-dogs.htm It might just be for raw fish. My husband and I are also fishermen. Our freezer is packed with mostly saltwater fish, albacore, mahi mahi, yellow tail, and yellow and blue fin tuna. Unfortuantly many of the large peditory fish have high mercury counts so I can't feed it very often even to myself. I do need to empty the freezer to be ready for our next long range trip. We do fish fresh water but mostly for Large mouth Bass. We do release them.

My dogs do love fish. I even by cans of Sardines to add to my picky dogs food. It is high in Omega 3. Just one sardine is all I need to get them to eat.

If you feed wild caught salmon from the pacific northwest, you want to freeze them for a month to kill a particular kind of dangerous parasite. If the river or lake is clean enough for people to eat fish out of, its ok to feed your dogs out of them too.

Re: Fresh fish for the Dogs?

Thanks for the link. Verde and Blue have eaten rotting salmon without any bad effects, and Verde has rolled a very spawned king salmon this year, other then the smell no bad effect.

So is raw salmon/local fish bad, can cooked local salmon/fish be good?

It's not bad, just be sure to freeze it first (same with venison) and don't give as the only food. Cooked fish could be worse because the bones become brittle when cooked and can get lodged in the throat or splinter in the GI tract and cause problems, raw bones are much more digestable.
