How bad is . . .

How bad is eukanuba? I have the ability to get it for free and we are really, really tight on money at the moment (having to move in with Julie's parents tight, yikes!). It would save us about $75 a month or so on dog food, but I don't want to harm my dogs by feeding them bad food. We would probably do it for about 6 months or so while we paid some things off, then go back to the better foods. What do you think?

I belive that as much as we love our dogs, you have to feed yourself first. These things happen. When we were starving students I actually fed my dogs a bag of 'Ol Roy. That was a mistake because it cost us vet bills we couldn't afford. But if your dogs have done ok on Euk, and it is just for a limited time, then I say you do what you have to do.

Eukanuba isn't the best, but it's far from the worst.

I agree with Briteday. It's not going to harm your dogs and they are still going to be fed. When you're in a better situation then you can start looking for a food you're happy with. They will be fine with this food as long as you transfer over nicely.

I fed it for a looooong time. Fed it exclusively many years ago, then went back to it again in '04. Used it for 2-3yrs straight and used to be the best food on the market, IMHO. They did change the formula a few times, and got royally fed up with that. It was not the same food it used to be when I first fed it, but that was even before P&G bought out the Iams company ... Lately, tho, I'm hearing more people are going back to it, and I think they might have straightened out their formula kinks. For free, I would definitely give it a try again. It was always a low carb food, their average maintenance formula being 38%, and their small breed pup foods dipped down to something like 28% carbs! I'd say go for it ... If you do decide to give it a try, would love to hear how they're doing on it

In the past I fed the dreaded Science Diet and my dogs lived for 16-17 years. I know it's not Eukanuba, but I also don't think it is all that bad. So I would say GO FOR IT! I hope you are able to pay all your bills.

Re: How bad is . . .

Thanks everyone. We will probably use one of their new foods, if we can get it free (everyone else at the store uses, and gets for free, their lamb formula). The one I asked about is Naturally Wild Venison. Its New Zealand venison and potato formula. Lloyd will not eat a lamb food, he hates lamb. So if we can only get lamb we won't be feeding it. We might also mix it with a better food, then it will still cut feeding costs but they won't be only eating Eukanuba. We have never fed Eukanuba so we don't know how they do on it yet.

Ingredents of the venison food:

Venison, Potato, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Meal, Fish Meal, Dried Egg Product, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Brewers Dried Yeast, Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Choline Chloride, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), DL-Methionine, Rosemary Extract.

Guaranteed Analysis:

Crude Protein (minimum) 23
Crude Fat (minimum) 14
Moisture (maximum) 10
Crude Fiber (maximum) 4
Omega-6 Fatty Acids (minimum) 1.75
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (minimum) 0.3

We will be ok money wise eventually! We just need to pay some stuff off, and to do that we need to cut costs where we can, so we are trying to find that areas to do that in.

Thanks!

I think Euk is fine, the ingredients in the one you posted look good to me. My beef with Euk is that it is overpriced for what it is, but if you are getting it free, that would take care of that concern. I wouldn't hesitate to feed it.

Re: How bad is . . .

I chose the eukanuba lamb and rice formula over all the other foods I tried. My dogs are thriving on it. They did not do well on canidae, innova, california natural, or others of that ilk, but they look great on eukanuba and all their digestive problems have disappeared.

I say if you can get it for free use a couple bags and see the results. If you dogs don't do well then switch off, but if the results are possitive then continue.
