| Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... I feed my dog Canidae. She does well on it. It is a good dog food.
Went to buy her Food on friday afternoon. Price was the same but the bag looked "different."
Yeah.. it was. Same price but the 40 pound bag is now a 35 pound bag.
I bet they thought no one would notice. |

I guess, once we've found the food that works and that we can afford, we can't become complacent. |

*sigh*
I guess it is time to write another letter.....
I just got done with letters to the Phone company that in its infinite wisdom has elected to go to Fiber Optic service. The result of this is that when the electric fails, the phone does too. Soooo.. How exactly do you call the power company (where I am there is no cell service and not eveyone HAS a cell phone). Beyond this, how would you get hold of emergency services?
No power when I wrote the letter.. so it is hand written as are each of the CC's to the Public Service Commission, the State Attorney General AND my local State Representative... (this hand writing got the power on just as I finished the last hand written copy... LOL).
Helloooo???? Are you and I the only ones to notice that "new" and "improved" is usually a way to charge the same and deliver LESS???? |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... I know how you are feeling, Elana--I really felt the hit for as much as Otis eats
But he wasn't doing good on this new formula-his gas was worse than EVER on it-so we are now in the process of transitioning to a new food--I just wish SOMETHING would stay the same-everyone has to make more money, unfortunately it isn't us |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... I have no objection to a business making a profit.. that is why they are in business. I just hate it when they try to trick me.
Change a formula, reduce the pounds, say nothing and charge the same. I would have rather paid more and gotten what I wanted? They already were very competitive!
Like the phone company thing.. "fiber optics mean better sound/tone.. and they can send images.. blah blah Blah." But the system isn't reliable. But they don't SAY that.. they try to tirick me.
Quite honestly, Copper prices are thru the roof and fiber optics are cheaper... and really I don't CARE if the State Trooper sounds like Trooper Smith.. I care immensely that I can call Tropper Smith when I am in a jam, regardless of the electricity being on or off.
Well, those letter went out and the one to Canidae is going out tomorrow... this is getting to be a full time job of late.... |

I bet they thought no one would notice. | Try this... Go to your local grocery store and get a gallon of ice cream. Then look at how much it really is, lol. Definitely not a gallon, lol. Everything is downsizing, and prices are remaining the same. |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... Yeah, I could care less about the size of the bag compared to the new formula. I have been able to find bags of old formula but my friend can't find them anymore and her dogs have all got the trots and have had for the past month. I'm worried about my one bitch who has a sensitive stomach and does pretty well on Canidae old formula.
So, my question to you all is this- WHAT ARE YOU ALL GOING TO FEED?
Just joined the forum so if there is a place for me to look for answers to this question, sorry...

However, I buy coffee and a one pound can of coffee became 13 ounces and now 11 ounces etc. while the price went up.
so, what am I going to feed now? Not sure. Inova looks good? Would go to RAW but the travel to the supplier is an issue. MAde my own for awhile.. and that was fine but I have no way to adequately portion out a proper Ca/P ratio and that is important. Making my own was also rapidly making me broke.
I fed my last dog Abady and it was AWESOME. This dog will not tolerate it. I tried and tried. *sigh*
So far she is OK on the Canidae new formula.. but I am concerned. |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... I quit feeding Canidae when I found out the formula was changing... they ruined it as far as I'm concerned. And since I am broke right now, I can't afford much else... I've gone to Costco and gotten a 40lb bag of Kirkland for $23. It's not as great as, say, Nature's Variety or California Natural, but if you're strapped for cash, it's a very decent food for the price. |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... Ugh. My brand did the same thing - they reduced the 37.5lb bag to 34 lbs, and price remained the same for a while ... It's now gone up to over $19 plus tax And Purina ONE has inflated to $33 for 34lbs May not seem like much but it really adds up!
BTW, I never was too thrilled with Canidae. They're slick ones. They list chicken meal & turkey meal as the first two ingredients to make the food seem more meat based, when in fact, the true #1 ingredient was poultry meal. Sneaky. I hate sneaky dog food companies ... And find myself looking for a new higher protein feed for rabbit season beacuse there is NO WAY I am paying $33 bucks for a bag of feed. Not unless it's gold plated kibble, lol |

I bet they thought no one would notice. | Actually, the size change and the formula changes were announced on their website some time ago
With all the changes that are possible today I think it is being a prudent pet owner to check in on all manufacturers' sites from time-to-time just to keep track of what is going on with their products.
Not just for pet foods but for medications, supplies, etc. These can change as well.
Once you have the information, you can make a judgement as to what you want to do. Personally, I think Canidae had gone to a better formula for its All-Stages food, but that's just an opinion. It's certainly still a good quality formula.
As to the increased cost - so what's new? Everything else is going up in price |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... Where I buy canidae it's still $1 a lb before tax (and this is with the new bags and new formula, which only come as 5,15,35 and 45lb bags). Is the problem canidae's new formula, which I haven't seen what exactly is so bad... they removed chicken which was 11th in the original and that was before drying... but they moved lamb meal from 5th to 3rd ingredient... they removed herring and replaced it with generic (ocean).... or is it that they have been picked up by Diamond? |

It's not as great as, say, Nature's Variety or California Natural, but if you're strapped for cash, it's a very decent food for the price. | I did the same thing and switched for the time being, I have to travel an hour away to purchase canidae, the last time I went there was a price increase of almost $3 a bag. And with the change in "formula" I figure since it is made by diamond now and that the kirkland brand is also made by diamond, might as well make a gradual change to the kirkland. Dogs have almost adjusted now after three weeks, still some stinky farting going on *LOL*(I miss the old formula of canidae! dog's had very little probs with gas and with six dogs in my house it makes a BIG difference) I will still scout around for a possibility of a better food. But with a savings of travel time, gas, and nine dollars a bag (and that was getting canidae with a multiple dog discount membership) Canidae did just send me some coupons for money off next purchase advertising the formula change........ if I end up traveling to longview (nearest place to purchase) I might pick up some.
Hmm, I just did a bit of research, looks like dog food analysis did a eval of the new formula..... still has the same star rating. Canidae site says that the larger bags of dry come in 35lb and 44lb bags, but my nearest supplier only carries the 35lb for just under $40 a bag. What a disappointment.

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... Well, get this. I just went to restock on Canidae. My bag was almost $7 more (with tax) than before, and 5 lbs less. What a rip off. I'm considering making some change. We'll see how they do on it. |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... Hello Everyone,
I worked at a pet store. They are a small private company only owning 9 stores in the entire country, and I was feeding my puppy Canidae until the swtiched the formula. I knew about it prior to the shipment because the company calls and lets us know. The problem is they try and tell us to tell costumers that the food is the same the packaging simply changed. I was furious when i found out and the next time their representative came to our store for promotions etc. I went nuts on him and now i no longer work there lol... I am now feeding Jax Orijen which i feel is def the top of the line stuff but alot more expensive. The point of the matter is that No one cares about the health of our dogs as long as money is involved. It is good to be knowledgable when it comes to nutrition because you can not trust anyone at pet stores these days, everyone is in it for the money. Example we were told to push foods such as Artemis, Fromm, Evangers, and Timberwolf, which are pretty good foods except for fromm, but the reasoning behind it was not for the benefit of the customer but rather because we knew that it those companies would be ours rather than Petco's, Petsmart's, and other large franchises for the next 3-5 years. It is very sad the way people think these days. Just thought you guys would want some insight on this stuff.

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... I don't mind the price increase. I work in the (human) food industry and I'm not surprised if dogfood prices are also increasing.
However, I did not know about the formula change. Does anyone know what it involves? I am considering switching to Innova Evo, my dogs are going to the vet today so I might ask about Evo, but it's been my experience that vets pretty much don't have a lot to say when it comes to nutrition. |

| Re: Canidae.. feeling a little ripped off... My store, an independent, is not pleased with the new formula of Canidae either. I stopped there and said, " OK, you have to help me find a new food", and I ended up getting Solid Gold Hundenflocken, and Hundchenflocken for the puppy. I am mixing it in with the last of my original recipe Canidae and so far, no diarrhea from anyone. Everyone seems to like it, too.

It's a company, they have to make money. I would rather pay more for the old formula though. I think I'm going to start switching mine to Evo redmeat, I just have to research the effects of higher protein. |
