Ringo and his first piece of raw chicken.

At first, he would gently lick the skin. Then he started tearing the meat while he was holding it down with his paw.

Then...
He just couldn't resist anymore. He had to have the whole thing in his mouth!

So, he seemed to really enjoy it. I hope everything continues well.
I bought him 40lbs (4 bags) of chicken leg quarters. That should last him for a while.
$25 for all, not bad. I was paying twice that for a 40lb bag of Canidae.

I just want to make sure. You do know you are going to need to feed him organs as well, and a variety of meats?

Yeah, that comes in a few weeks. I already checked the prices, and it's STILL below what I was paying for dog food.

The discount I get helps too, though.

I can't wait to start feeding fish/beef/organs. I want to see how reacts to it all. Though I already know he loves fish.

My puppy won't touch it with her paws she just uses her mouth..lol

I too just started feeding my dog raw and I am to the point now where I am ready to mix in another protein source other then chicken. It is a great thing watching them eat isn't it?

Re: Ringo and his first piece of raw chicken.

When I fed Ringo this morning, around 8 AM, he only ate half of it, and left the other half sitting on the porch. He was looking at it, but wasn't touching it.

I picked it up and washed it off, and put it in the refrigerator.

What's up? Was he just not hungry since I fed him around 7 PM last night?

It can take a few days for them to understand that the raw food is their meal from now on. So he might go hungry for a bit until it "clicks" and he's like.. OH! So this is a normal meal not a nylabone!

Re: Ringo and his first piece of raw chicken.

Ok, I can now admit it.. three times now I have thrown the dog a bone.. A raw chicken leg WITH bone in fact. She had no problem with it. It seemed to me that she did not crunch the leg bone enough before swallowing but she has not regurgitated them. I used it as a substitute for 3/4 of her regular kibble meal, so she still got a little kibble, and a full service of kibble for the other meal that day. Its kinda hard to watch her eat it though. I am not comfortable switching over 100 percent because of the mess, storage, and need to make sure she gets a balanced diet.. but as a treat it worked out fine. I have also given up on rawhide bones and use only big natural bones.. they cost 3 times as much but last 10 times longer or more.

Re: Ringo and his first piece of raw chicken.

Just remember that because your dog can absorb more of the nutrients from raw food he won't eat as much as he would with kibble. That is a bonus because not as much comes out the other end. LOL
