Exclamation To Those Feeding Nutro --

I'm sure many have seen the two links on Consumer Affairs posted here:

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news0...recalls93.html

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news0...recalls98.html

But I just found something even more shocking. A Consumer Report list (linked below) that is growing by the day with not only customer complaints, but reports of death after death of animals on Nutro. I was shocked! I would never feed my dog any Nutro product, but the problem appears to have gotten much worse than I ever expected, and appears to be getting worse by the day. This company needs to step up and take responsibility, and the FDA needs to do a recall!

Here's the link to the shocking list:

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html

Good grief.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

I have a good friend who feeds her dog Nutro, and I've tried to show her these...but she dismisses it as "you can't believe everything you see on the internet". It's upsetting that she won't even consider the possibility that the food has problems. She works for Petsmart, so is in contact with a Nutro rep who reassures her that nothing is wrong with the food. *sigh* I just hope nothing bad happens to her dog because of it; he's a great dog who I would hate to see be taken by Nutro because his owner refuses to consider it. :\

ETA: Even if something did happen to her pup, I doubt she'd blame the food.

Thanks for posting that. My dog is only a year old and doing fine on Nutro but I'm worried about it and I'm going to bring it up to the vet at the next visit. In the mean time I think I'm going to start weaning her off of it and trying a higher quality food.

I have several friends in another dog forum that while feeding their dogs nutro....observed their dogs drinking alot of water and having loose stooles, they got scared and switched cold turkey to another food, said their dogs got back to normal after about a day, they recomended... just switch and get your dog off Nutro. Two of the six are employed by petsmart and after observing customer complaints and the instore vet's observations on this food, and the crap story the Nutro sales rep was giving to all the store employee's when they posed questions about the problems. Theses people said get your dog off the food pronto.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

Is this limited to supply areas (states) like the last incident that had warehouses contaminating the bags of food?. I have my dogs and Mortimer on Nutro. They all seem to love it...

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

Becky, we've had problems here in LA and the site had complaints from all around the US. Looks more like a national problem and we won't know if particular warehouses are to blame until Nutro steps up and quits trying to cover up a known problem. Tons of dogs aren't sick and dying for no reason while on the same food, Nutro clearly knows there's a problem somewhere.

Becky, I'd get your dogs off Nutro ASAP, don't risk it.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

I think I will. I haven't added much to their old food yet (I just got the food last week). And they really gobbled it up too...bummer! But better safe than sorry. Thanks for the tip.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

Uh, this is a big problem. Nutro is the only food that I have found on my island that doesnt have by-products in it. Nutro is the best food sold there. Im moving back there in September, what the heck am I supposed to feed when I move back??? Meow mix?! I dont think so! We cant ship food, it costs wayyy too much to ship food from the mainland to Hawaii, especially since it has to go to Oahu first and then to my island.

Not only that, my breeder friend feeds all her dogs and cats Nutro. Gosh, this is horrible. I can easily cut out the Nutro wet food from my cats diet right now here in Colorado, but this is a big problem come September.

Argh....my mom's 19-year-old cat will ONLY eat Nutro Salmon dry cat food. She's very particular, and you can't just change an elderly cat's food willy-nilly. Cats will (and do!) starve themselves if they don't like the offerings. Hopefully no harm will come of it.

Red face Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

So after reading these I called my vet and asked what to do. They told me that if my dog is doing well on nutro to leave her on it because every food has good and bad sides and it is just a matter of finding what works for your dog, and that they have lots of clients on nutro doing just fine.. ahh what to do, i hate to go against what my vet says..

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

I bought a 4# bag of Solid Gold and had sticker shock! But if they like it, I will probably continue buying it...gotta work it into the ol' budget now.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

LuvMyPup, not all vets specialize in nutrition. Changing your dogs food will not hurt it, however staying on Nutro may. I would not stick with a dog food proven to cause problems just because your vet says to.

Becky, Solid Gold is really good. Which one did you choose? Back in the day, Audubon was on the Wolf King, and the others on Hundenflocken. It's a bit pricey, I admit. Did they have Wellness there? Not sure about Petco, but at the other smaller pet stores here, Wellness is quite a bit cheaper than Solid Gold, but still the same great quality.

Rescue: It's Solid Gold MMillenium. I'm going to check at PetsMart...their prices always seem a little better. I'm going to check on Wellness as well.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

About the Nutro cat food...I haven't heard much bad about their cat food. Can anyone tell me if there have been deaths/recalls related to Nutro's cat food line? I'm currently feeding my cats Nutro Max weight control...but I might switch again. I can't really afford to feed my cats super expensive food like I am with Logan. Anyone know about the Nutro cat food? I would never trust their dog food, but I would hope that they're seperate? If not and I'm just dreaming then I'll switch 'em again, lol.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

Kotone, I've read thru tons of the posts and most, if not all, seem to involve the dog foods. I haven't really heard anything about the cat foods being a problem.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

I just went here http://hubpages.com/hub/Nutro_Dog_Fo...ll_Information and it gives a full list of all the foods affected. There is a class action lawsuit in effect.

By reading the list it seems to me that it is about the canned wet foods and not the dry kibble varietys. I would never give my dog any wet food no matter what brand it is. I think wet foods can give a dog worms, but that is just my opinion I don't know if it actually causes them or not.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

My only experience with Nutro is with their cat food. My cat loved it but I believe it caused her death. This was about 6 years ago. My vet sent me to a specialist that told me she had a enlarged heart. He asked if she ate dog food. I said no. He said he has not seen this in cats since they started adding Taurine to cat food. I was told to supplement her but my cats heart started bleeding so she was put to sleep. When I compared ingredience on cat food, the Nutro was the only one I could find that did not have a guaranteed amount of taurine on the lable. I think that has changed now, but I don't trust there quality, and will never feed it again.

Re: To Those Feeding Nutro --

I'd stay away from ANYTHING owned by the huge corporations. Go with a natural product by a smaller run organization. The extra cost is nothing compared to giant vet bills and the grief from losing a cherished pet.
