Looking for a good quality canned food

Argos is currently eating Innova Large Breed and doing very well on it. He tends to get bored very quickly from just plain kibble. So, we add some canned to it. For some time now we have done the Merrick canned foods and have had no problems at all. I loved the variety that I was able to provide with Merrick canned food. Well, until last night.

I mixed Argos' kibble, canned and his supplements in a bowl and then dumped in his elevated dish. He gobbled it right down. I have a cold so I didn't smell anything out of the ordinary. A few hours later, he threw up all over my bed and the floor. Rich, my fiancee said the bowl that I mixed his food in smelled like human vomit. So I gave his the can it came in (Cowboy Cookout) and he said the can also smelled like human vomit! My dog rarely ever gets sick from eating anything so this really concerned me. Today, he is fine, but I wont give him the cans that I have left.

I always thought that Merrick was a reputable premium food. I did alot of research on Merrick and today I'm not so sure that they are. I have no problem with cooking food for him or adding food to his kibble. I have even been considering raw but would like to educate myself on it first. I'm looking for a good quality canned food that I can use occasionally. I prefer something that has several varieties of flavors if possible. It also has to be wheat, corn, and soy free as Argos has food allergies, and he's not very fond of fish. What do you guys feed your dogs and what would you recommend?

Thanks!
Christie

Re: Looking for a good quality canned food

Whenever I add a bit of canned food to their kibble I use Evo. You might also want to look into Natural Balance's Potato & Duck or Sweet Potato & Venison. Natural Balance also makes a Sweet Potato & Fish, which is the kibble I feed, but you said he isn't fond of fish. All are grain-free.

Sorry to hear about your dog's reaction to Merrick. I hope he's feeling better. It's possible that you just got a bad can.

Wellness, EVO, and Evanger's are excellent canned foods. Please note that Evanger's is not sold as a complete food, but oh is it good stuff to add to kibble! My dogs are on EVO kibble, but they don't really like the canned EVO for some reason. They love the Wellness, and they also love Evanger's.

Re: Looking for a good quality canned food

If you are just wanting to add variety, I wouldn't worry about canned dog food and would feed leftovers from the table. That way you can be selective as to exactly what you feed him.

I also suggest you look more into a raw diet as there is no kibble in the world that comes close to a good prey model raw diet. You can begin your research by looking at my web page at http://www.skylarzack.com/rawfeeding.htm
It has links to other pages and a recommendation for a book to read.

I feed Maya a little pinnacle duck and potatoe once in a while and she loves it. It's been great so far and I haven't heard anything bad about the company. It also smells good enough to eat unlike many other canned dog foods.
