Is My Pup's Food Too Rich for Her?

Hi Everyone,

We have a wonderful 9 mo. old female mini aussie that we have been feeding her Solid Gold Puppy Food. She's doing very well on it we thought, but every week she has loose bowels or diarrhea and I end up making brown rice and mixing it in her food. Just wondering what you all think. Any suggestions for a different food? I know her having these problems every week isn't a good sign. Thanks.

How did you transfer her onto the new food? How long has she been on the food?

Instead of brown rice try a little bit of canned pumpkin. It's always worked like a charm and is better for her than the rice.

There are several other brands of food that you can try. Natural Balance is another good food. Other good brands are Innova, Wellness, Taste of the wild, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Blue Wilderness, Merrick, and Timberwolf to name just a few. I just posted on some one elses food thread; you might have to try a few different food before you find the right one for your dog. If she's having lose stool every week it may be time to switch things up and try something else.

She's been on Solid Gold Puppy Food since we brought her home at 8 weeks. I don't want to go to Wellness because they are made by Old Mother Hubbard and I found out that they put onions in their biscuits and just thought that they probably put them in the food too, so we got our other dogs off Wellness and went to Solid Gold. I thought the bowel problems were because she got food scraps, so we stopped that almost entirely. But she does love her carrotts and gets a small slice when I make salads. I thought that canned pumpkin was for constipation and brown rice for diarrhea. Maybe I'll check with the vet and see what she says. Thanks for your recommendations.

We haven't had any problems with Wellness. Looking at the ingredients I much prefer the Core because there are no grains. What are you looking for out of a fodo?

I switched Ted over to Wellness Core and he's been doing wonderful. Much better than he was on the Natural Balance. Another good food.
Here are a list of the ingredients.
Whitefish, Whitefish Meal, Salmon Meal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Potatoes, Dried Ground Potato, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Pea Fiber, Tomato Pomace, Natural Fish Flavor, Flaxseed, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Kale, Broccoli, Spinach, Parsley, Apples, Blueberries, Vitamins & Minerals, Choline Chloride, Chicory Root Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Dried Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Products, Rosemary Extract.
