dog vomits/bile

I've been trying to settle on a food for my 1 1/2 dog. Currently on Eukanuba, tried Nutro, Wellness. They didn't work out, caused more bile. After the fact read many similar situations. Now going to give Canidae a try. He will vomit 1-2 times per month. Usually overnite, yes do give food up to 11pm. Vet believes no health/allergy issues. Most people I come across claim their dog never throws up. Feel like odd man out. My question. . .what is considered occasional vomit? Does anyone have a dog that vomits monthly? Vet seems to be ok with that. Hope this is something he outgrows, kind of wearing on me.

Is there any food in the vomit? Just bile? Usually bile vomit means empty stomach and stomach expecting food momentarily. Do you free feed or have specific feeding times? If you free feed and nothing is available sometime when the stomach is ready for food could be a cause for bile vomit.

I suggest one or two feeding times/day. They don't have to be at the exact same time every day. What is not eaten in 15 minutes or so should be taken up and fed next meal. That way the dog and his stomach know about when to expect food.

Yes, does eat twice a day 6am and 6pm, does not free feed. I even give a snack around 10-11pm with a pepcid. I've tried it all. At the point of thinking he just has to throw up a couple times a month, or maybe something in food. What is "normal" amount of times a dog with vomit?

I wouldn't give a pepcid. I can't remember my dogs vomiting in years. Sometimes when they are eating something like a turkey neck, they might bring it back up into their mouth to chew a little more but it rarely hits the floor and is immedietely swallowed again after a few more chomps.

The absolute best thing to rid your dog of this problem is to put him on a prey model raw diet. If you aren't up to that, try a food with no grains and see what happens.

OK ... After thinking a little more about this problem I have decided it is not a diet problem. Something else is causing this. It's possible that an organ isn't working correctly but I don't think that is the problem either.

Each time he throws up, think back over the previous 24 hours. What was different? Did he play harder with another dog. Did you take him for an extra long walk. Did he get a special treat that he usually doesn't get? Did he eat anything that wasn't part of his normal diet? Maybe a piece of fruit or veggie? Did you add anything special to his meal? Did he take his heartworm pill? Did he take a flea treatment? Any other monthly or weekly meds? Did he go someplace he normally doesn't go? Did he go swimming? You get my drift. Look for anything different not part of the daily routine. You may even want to write down unusual things each time he vomits and then look at several occasions and you might see a pattern. Somewhere in all that is the cause of his problem.

I wouldn't get terribly upset about this. It's a little agravating but it doesn't sound real serious. I think it is more of an inconvenience than anything.

My male has what I call empty stomach snydrome where he will vomit bile in the mornings unless he has something to eat prior to bedtime. I feed him cottage cheese (light, yet satisfying) or plain yogurt. It takes care of the problem. He had serious GI problems when I got him, so I kept a daily journal on him. He was tested for everything from Addisons to thyroid, all negative. I had to feed him up to 7 times/day to keep food down. The daily journaling helped me see a pattern.

About once every week or two, in the morning before her breakfast, Timber will expel a small amout of bile. I think it is the case that her system is expecting food as she does not vomit if she eats, but does before eating. Meals are 8 am and 5 pm, and vomiting is before breakfast so maybe she needs more food later.

Dogs do occasionally vomit, if it's not very often I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes my dogs vomit bile in the mornings, it's called "Empty tummy syndrome" same as Poodleholic. I fixed that by giving them a late snack before bedtime. This usually corrects the bile vomit, but not always. IMO I would not give Pepcid unless prescrbed by your vet.

My dogs bedtime treats consists of one or two of.... Natural Choice Crunch Treats (various berries or carrots) Kong Stuff-n liver biscuits or CA Natural Lamb and Rice Health Bars.
