storing food

I recently bought three 28.5lbs of Innova EVO red meat. It was on sale at my petstore. Buy 2 or more bags opf any dog food and get 20% off. Each bag cost 49.99 and then minus 20%, pretty good price huh? I should of bought more but not sure if the food would go bad.

How long can I store an unopen bag of dry dog food in room temp? I know htat if i freeze it i can preserve it better but who has a freezer that can fit two 30lbs bags of food?

Re: storing food

What are the bags’ expiration dates, “room temperature”, how long will you pet go through each bag?

Re: storing food

I have airtight containers that I keep the unopened bags in. It keeps it pretty fresh. I don't think it would stay as fresh opened at room temp, or maybe that's just me.

Re: storing food

I use one of those large bins that looks like a rectangular garbage can with a lid that seals. Got it at Petco, and when I put in a 30lb bag, it fills it about 2/3 of the way. It's done a pretty good job for me so far. If a bag lasts only 2 months for you, then I don't see the food going bad on you, as Aug. 2009 is a ways away, a little over a year. 3 bags is 6 months. Just store the unopened bags in a cool dry place.

Re: storing food

Lonewolfblue, thats what Ive been doing. I was just wondering how others store them, maybe i can get an idea. As for the unopen bags, i just leave it like unopen and keep them in my house. For the open bag i do put it in a bin with a lid. I'll only open another bag if Stitch finish the first bag.

Re: storing food

I keep our food in a large rubbermaid bin. Works for us!

Re: storing food

If you go to Lowes right now, they may still have some plastic Kingsford charcol containers. Check them out they work great for dog food and have a little door that opens easily to scoop the food out. I have 3 of them. They are a clear plastic bottom with a blue lid. David

Re: storing food

I keep mine in a big bin, that holds 60 lbs at a time...it is in a controlled environment so it won't get too hot ...too cold is OK!

A 30 lb bag lasts about a week, so within 2 weeks, the bin is washed and refilled.

As long as no mice, moisture or insects can get in your container, it should be fine.

Re: storing food

30lbs a week? How many dogs do you have or its for the horse?

I keep the unopen bags in my house and the open one I keep outside. I have 2 container outside. One big container that can probely store 80lbs and one for 20lbs. The big container I store the open bag which I have left over from pouring in the 20lbs container. I leave the left over unpoured food in the bag in the container.

The container is not airtight but nothing gets inside. Its one of those storeage container you get at walmart with a lid.

Washed? I don't even wash mine, lol. When it gets near empty, I just empty the rest in a plastic container, tap the container to get most of the crumbs out, refill, and then empty the plastic container on the top. I never leave any old food on the bottom, I put it on top of the new. Usually it's only about 3 or 4 cups worth, I let it bet near empty before I open the new bag.
