Unhappy Natural Balance RECALL?

Ted was feeling bad yesterday. Hanging his head, not really drinking, not eating, but he will run around, bark at other dogs, still peeing and pooping fine so I know it's not something I need to rush him in for. He was just at the vet and checked out very healthy. If he's like this much longer though I'll take him in. He WILL not eat his food "Natural Balace Sweet Potato and Fish". I bought a new back and when I opened it, it looked and smelled different. Thing is I didn't just buy it. It hasn't been opened and I checked for any holes. I was waiting until his other back was finished before opening it. I opened it last night.

Usually it's a light brown, disk shaped, crunchy thing. This bag has dark brown shaped disks, they're greesy, and smell like cardboard. Now when I opened it I thought "Oh weird", but now he won't even go near it. If he does he sniffs and back away with his nose up in the air. It's almost like he's telling me "uhh I'm not eatin that! Are you trying to poison me?". So I tried some of the other dogs food and he'll eat a tiny bit of it, but sniffs and gets close. Not his food though.

Problem is he has to be on a grain-less, fish based is better food. I can't just run to the store and pick up a new brand of food. I don't want to dump it because it's $35 worth of food (what can I say I'm broke and cheap lol)..but when I do I'm not going to buy another bag of the same thing. I'm not dumping $70 worth of food.

Has any one heard about a recall?

Re: Natural Balance RECALL?

Did you get it at a store, or online? If you got from any store, they should take it back, no questions asked. I returned a bag of food recently, can't remember if I posted or not, but they had massive diarrhea within a day of starting the bag. When I was loading it into my car to return it, I noticed it was torn on the corner and had been taped closed with clear tape (not by me). I returned it with no problem and they took a bunch of information from me.

Re: Natural Balance RECALL?

Even if I can't take it back in the bag? I have only been able to find a grain less food at petco. I was happy even though I hadn't planned on keeping him on it. I've wanted to switch to Wellness Core.

Hmm dump food or go fishing in the alley trash can for my food bag..? lol I think I'll be calling or better yet go in on Saturday after the adopin and have a talk with the manager.

When you took it back, did you put it all back in the bag?

I keep his food in a container and store the rest in the freezer. A 15 pound bag lasts a good 3 months. So not thinking I'd have this problem I put the food in the container, rest in freezer and took the trash out.

Re: Natural Balance RECALL?

It was at Petco, and I had the bag, I had just opened it the day before and I haven't been transfering it to the plastic thingy lately because they go through it in about 2 weeks. I would bring it back without the bag and see what they say.

Ehh I'll go get the bag. It's on the top and nothing has gone in other wise. Now the real hard part is finding the reciept..

What brand of food did you return?

Thank you for replying.

yup, they have awesome return policies, i'll give them that.

People brought back food all the time, no questions asked. If you by a bag and the dog doesn't like it (nothing wrong with it) they will still take it back.

It was the NB Lamb and Rice. I don't think it was the NB that made him sick...at the time I did, but he got sick again yesterday and it's like 3 weeks later, so I want the vet to check for Giardia....but it still bugged me that the bag had been opened.

Re: Natural Balance RECALL?

Isn't there a place on Natural Balance's website where you can check the test results on your particular batch of food? I thought I saw that feature recently added to their website where you just enter some set of numbers printed on the outside of the bag (it should specify on the site which) and it will give you the test results/info on that particular batch. Maybe I'm way off here or you already tried that, but I just wanted to throw that out there. Good luck! I feed NB cans so I'm interested to know how you fare.

Re: Natural Balance RECALL?

Sometimes you can just end up with a bag that has gone rancid. I've had that happen before, the food was no where near the expiration date printed on the bag, but it was certainly past it's "prime". I threw it out...should have returned it!

Re: Natural Balance RECALL?

I was researching Natural Balance recently and in April of 2007 there was a recall because some melamine was found in their Venison and Brown Rice dry and wet. The culprit was something in the rice. You might be able to google it for more info, but I wondered when you mentioned the bag was older.

Natural Balance ended up reformulated their Venison and sweet potato formula after that recall incident and added that test result option to their site after it happened too. That would have to be a pretty old bag to have been affected. I don't think it would be good to at this point if it even if it wasn't affected by the recall. I also thought the recall was limited to the Venison formula also, maybe I'm wrong though.
