Raw bones

Can I just ask -- when do kibble-feeders give raw bones? The dog isn't supposed to be digesting kibble and raw at the same time, right? So when you feed kibble and give raw bones occasionally for chewing on, how do you ensure that your dog is safe?

Re: Raw bones

I have fed kibble and raw together a few times, its really not the crisis situation its made out to be, sure it "could" go wrong, but I dont worry about it, its not an every day thing.

I wouldnt worry about feeding a bone here and there to a kibble fed dog as a treat

Re: Raw bones

Whoa, what is the problem with feeding raw bones with kibble? I give Logan raw bones sometimes as a treat, and he's eating kibble too...what's supposed to be bad about it?? I had no idea, lol.

Any bones that are, well, raw. Not processed at all. The kind you see in supermarkets that are frozen and have raw meat hanging off them.

I read that kibble and raw food are digested at different rates by the dog, and that leaving kibble and raw in the digestive tract at the same time will slow down the digestion of raw, increasing the chances of bacterial infection.

Or something.

I was unaware of that.

Is the not the case with most food stuffs though?

ie the rate at which raw meat is broken down is different to raw vegetables

That's exactly what I do. My girls get a raw bone - subject to availability - maybe once-a-week. It's not a significant portion of their diet. It's for recreation and dental care.

Re: Raw bones

Giving raw bones for chewing to dogs who are fed kibble isn't a problem. Feeding a raw meal and kibble, too, is a problem, because of the difference in the digestion of each.
