| more puppy poop questions, or, how long to try a new food? Hi all,
Weaned Jack off Purina Puppy chow to Solid Gold Wolf Cub. Did this over about a month's time; went very slow because we were also traveling across country and didn't want to complicate things.
Anyway, he's been on just the Solid Gold for a good week now; I also use the kibble for most of his treats, but also use a lesser amount of "special" treats. His poop has been "pudding-like", or about the consistency of the canned pumpkin I've started adding. I should mention that while on just the Purina, his stools were firm, easy to pick up.
I've just started adding the pumpkin over the past 2 days. His stools have firmed up somewhat; still very soft though. Pretty noticeable gas, too, to say the least.
My question: how long is a fair trial of a new food? We have just a little bit of the bag left, and it will soon be time to buy some more food in a couple of days. Course, it just now dawned on me I'll need to buy more Solid Gold even if we do decide to switch, so we can make that change gradually.
So, how long do you leave the dog on a food to give the stool time to firm up? I'm assuming that we aren't necessarily supposed to feed him pumpkin for the rest of his life.
Thanks. |

| Re: more puppy poop questions, or, how long to try a new food? I've been wondering this as well. My guy's been on Chicken Soup for almost a month now, and his poos are still not right. They're not runny, just...soft, and like you said, hard to pick up. He sometimes has hard & dark ones, but they're usually a medium brown and soft. :\ I've been thinking of trying another food, just don't know if I should yet.
Maybe someone can offer advice, lol. |

| Re: more puppy poop questions, or, how long to try a new food? I don't know what a "fair trial" is to most people, but my Miniature Pinscher has the same kind of poop you're explaining. Only with Natural Balance. And he rarely gets treats, and just some fresh meat every now and then. Our "trial" has been going on for a couple of months. We went through a move, and I just didn't change the food. We've been settled in here for over a month, and he had these kinds of poops before we moved. He has seen the vet and all they recommended was switching the food. I have other dogs that don't do well on the brand I'm feeding, I'm just using Jager as an example because he's knocked out on my lap as we speak.
Anyway, I think you should change the food when you feel it is necessary. If you feel a food is not delivering the results you want, move on to the next choice. I'd give it at least a month, but then again, that's just me. I'd give it more time. I just like to see if it's going to work out. Obviously if the poor pooch is suffering those kinds of poops, change it. I am heading out shopping tomorrow, and getting Jager a different brand to transition to. Hopefully, it'll do him good. I've been researching again all night, and I now have a short list of the foods I'd like to try, if this next one doesn't work out.
Good luck! I hope you find what works for your pup. |

What kind of dog is Jack?
| He is a Great Pyrenees/Malamute or Husky mix. His mom was a stray Pyr who had her pups in our barn, and we had seen her with this "sled dog" looking dog, that is most likely the father, judging by the looks of Jack. I just added his picture, with his favorite "toy bowl", to my signature. My avatar is our other boy, Rupert.
So, I am looking for a food appropriate for a large breed puppy; I am strongly leaning toward trying the Innova.
